Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Rome and New Italy: Recuerdos De Italia This book is the record of the lively emotions awakened in my soul by the marvelous spectacles of Italy. It is not a book of travels. I have not designed to add one more to the excellent works we already possess in Castilian upon the artistic nation, for these are in the hands of all travelers. When a people, a monument, or a landscape made a profound impression on my mind, I took my pen and hastened to communicate that feeling to my readers with all fidelity. I have not, then, followed any order or itinerary in my book. I have placed my pictures where it seemed best, so that they do not bear any particular relation to each other; and I have sometimes returned to a town from which I seemed to have departed. Each picture may therefore form a separate work. In these pages there is but little of the present life and manners of Italy. With that nation, the longer it lives the more it recollects. We must look at it historically and aesthetically. We must endeavor to connect its great monuments with the ages in which they were constructed, with the generations to which they owe their creation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days Near Rome, Vol. 2 of 2 N a beautiful April morning we reached Frosinone by rail from Rome. The country was in its freshest, bright est green. At the station we found plenty of carriages waiting, and were soon leaving the town of Frosinone behind on its high isolated hill, and advancing fast into the mountains, through a rich corn-clad country. On the left, the most conspicuous feature was always Fumone, a knot of castellated buildings and cypresses on a lofty conical hill, where, in a prison, which none who look upon it can help feeling un utterably desolate, the dethroned Coelestine, who had been dragged to the papal throne from his hermitage in the Abruzzi, was forced by his successor Boniface VIII., at the age of 81, to spend the last ten months of his life. These are the dull hours of the day - getting up, going to bed, waiting at stations, between visits, and when you are weary and indifferent. At such times you look at things on the dark side. There is but one remedy, and that is a pencil and taking notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New York Stories of Edith Wharton

Download or read book The New York Stories of Edith Wharton written by Edith Wharton and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 20 short stories and novellas offer an exquisite portrait of Old New York, spanning from the Civil War through the Gilded Age (New York Times). “Edith Wharton . . . remains one of the most potent names in the literature of New York.” —New York Times Edith Wharton wrote about New York as only a native can. Her Manhattan is a city of well-appointed drawing rooms, hansoms and broughams, all-night cotillions, and resplendent Fifth Avenue flats. Bishops’ nieces mingle with bachelor industrialists; respectable wives turn into excellent mistresses. All are governed by a code of behavior as rigid as it is precarious. What fascinates Wharton are the points of weakness in the structure of Old New York: the artists and writers at its fringes, the free-love advocates testing its limits, widows and divorcées struggling to hold their own. The New York Stories of Edith Wharton gathers twenty stories of the city, written over the course of Wharton’s career. From her first published story, “Mrs. Manstey’s View,” to one of her last and most celebrated, “Roman Fever,” this new collection charts the growth of an American master and enriches our understanding of the central themes of her work, among them the meaning of marriage, the struggle for artistic integrity, the bonds between parent and child, and the plight of the aged. Illuminated by Roxana Robinson’s introduction, these stories showcase Wharton’s astonishing insight into the turbulent inner lives of the men and women caught up in a rapidly changing society.
