Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All Plymouth is made up of the results of pilgrimage. How many scores of fathoms deep the real Plymouth shore lies I do not know. It is down there somewhere where it cooled into bathylithic crust back in the gray dawn of time when the earth was made. There it is part of the same ledge of which Scituate and Cohasset are built. All above that is terminal moraine, rock detritus piled upon rock foundation by the glacier. Plymouth Rock itself thus came joy riding from some ledge up Boston way, alighting from this first and greatest New England Transportation System only a few hundred thousand years before Mary Chilton arrived to set foot upon it."

In the darkest hour of this night, I saw a thin point of light rise out of the mystery of the sea far to the eastward, the tiny sail of the shallop of the old moon, blown landward by little winds of dawn, making port on the shore of "hither Manomet." In the velvety blackness of this ultimate hour of night the slender sail curved[...]".

Book excerpt: Wisconsin Highway 23 is part of the National Highway System (NHS) and is a rural principal arterial that connects Fond du Lac and Sheboygan in east central Wisconsin. Both west and east ends of the project are located in growing urban areas of Fond du Lac and Plymouth. Nearly 20 miles in length, this highway corridor serves high traffic volumes near the urban areas and lower traffic volumes in rural areas. This combined Limited Scope Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision (LS SFEIS/ROD) evaluates the No- Build Alternative, several Build Alternatives, and a series of corridor preservation alternatives for future transportation improvements, and selects an alternative. The Preferred Build Alternative is the Selected Alternative and reconstructs WIS 23 to a 4-lane divided highway on the existing alignment and creates interchanges, connector roads, and a trail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pilgrim Trails: A Plymouth-to-Provincetown Sketchbook "There!" said the artist, "isn't that a nautical-looking house?" When the artist says that a house is nautical, he means that it looks as if it had been built by seafaring men; not by wealthy ship-owners, but by generations of skippers and men before the mast. When you build a nautical house, you should begin more than a hundred years ago with a small cottage on the side-hill over the harbor, and add on a snug cabin now and then, tucking in a shipshape companionway here and there, and running a new section out along the slope. If you like to indulge your taste in roofs, you make a different kind for every addition. One section may be gable, another lean-to, and the one-story addition may run out as long as you please, shaped on top something like the roof of a barge. Simply fit your building to the ups and downs of the land and the ways of the wind. A bit of faded blue paint somewhere on the blinds or near the door, and all your roofing weathered by many hundred harbor gales, and your house is nautical. Book Introducing the Yellowstone Trail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the days of the Model T, there were few rural roads that "automobilists" could use. The rough dirt wagon roads often turned to mud. The government had lost interest in roads when the railroads came. So, in the American tradition, concerned citizens formed groups to "do it themselves." Some were well-financed industrial groups. Some, like the Yellowstone Trail Association, represented grass roots boosters who hoped for a better future for their small towns. The Yellowstone Trail opened the great Northwest to auto travel, including the main route to Yellowstone National Park from east and west coasts. Trail associations painted their symbols on roadside telegraph poles and rocks, charged towns and businesses an advertising fee, beckoned tourists and lobbied governments to fund "their" road. They were successful in establishing interstate routes. But then the governments began building, maintaining, and numbering roads; down came the colorful symbols and names and up went sterile numbers. And when the Depression arrived, the death knell sounded for trail associations. Today the old route of the Yellowstone Trail is marked piecemeal by Interstate, US, state and county highway numbers. But in some places the old route is no longer a road. There is a farm near Mobridge, South Dakota, where on a sunny afternoon you can see a slight depression of a long-ago road in the waving grass and a small rising bank as the depression turns and disappears over a low hill. Stand in the quiet and imagine the clanking of the Model T, the purring of the Studebaker Six, and the chatter of the Winton.
