Book Old Norse Icelandic Philology and National Identity in the Long Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Old Norse Icelandic Philology and National Identity in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Gylfi Gunnlaugsson and published by National Cultivation of Cultur. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For centuries, the literary heritage preserved in Icelandic medieval manuscripts has played a vital role in the self-image of the Icelandic nation. From the late eighteenth century, Icelandic scholars managed to study and publish this material on their own terms. Throughout the long nineteenth century, they also started to engage in philological work. This coincided with an increasing awareness among Icelanders of a separate nationality and their growing demand for autonomy. What was the connection between these two developments? The twelve chapters in this book explore the interplay between various national discourses that characterised the scholarly reception of Icelandic heritage during the period. Contributors are: Alderik H. Blom, Clarence E. Glad, Matthew James Driscoll, Gylfi Gunnlaugsson, Simon Halink, Hjalti Snær Ægisson, Jon Gunnar Jørgensen, Annette Lassen, and Ragnheiður Mósesdóttir."--

CARPENTER AND PROFESSOR ARTHUR F. J. REMY Of Columb1a Un1vers1ty PREFACE The completion of this work would have been impossible along the present lines if the author had not been able, throughout the course of his investigations, to draw without reserve on the advice and assistance of several gentlemen who were kind enough to place their special philological accomplishments at his disposal. The author is indebted to Professor William H. Carpenter, of Columbia University, for the suggestion of the subject and for many hints as to the division and distribution of the material, as well as for many literary references of great value. To Professor Eugen Mogk, of Leipzig, are due the author's thanks for suggestions as to the source of some of the folklore material in GHS. Mr. Halldor Hermannsson, Custodian of the Fiske Icelandic Collection at the Cornell University Library, aided the author in properly utilizing the resources of that great collection, also by sending him lists of MSS. inaccessible in this city, and by introducing him by mail to Mr. Matthias pordarson, then of Copenhagen, now of Reykjavik, Iceland, who copied the Ggngu-Hrolfs Rimur at Copenhagen, and later collated them with another MS. at Reykjavik. Professor Arthur F. J. Remy, of Columbia University, carefully went over the entire MS., thus giving the author numerous corrections and suggestions based on an intimate acquaintance with the phonology of Old Norse and with the whole field of medieval literature. But for Professor Remy's generous gift of his time and his expert knowledge in these fields, the publication of these pages might have been much delayed. Mr. Charles F. Barnason, a native of Iceland, and now a student at the College of the City of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first account of Old Norse syntax for almost a hundred years and the first ever in a non-Scandinavian language. Book The Nordic Languages

Download or read book The Nordic Languages written by Oskar Bandle and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2002 with total page 1194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook is not tied to a particular methodology but keeps in principle to a pronounced methodological pluralism, encompassing all aspects of actual methodology. Moreover it combines diachronic with synchronic-systematic aspects, longitudinal sections with cross-sections (periods such as Old Norse, transition from Old Norse to Early Modern Nordic, Early Modern Nordic 1550-1800 and so on). The description of Nordic language history is built upon a comprehensive collection of linguistic data; it consists of more than 200 articles written by a multitude of authors from Scandinavian and German and English speaking countries. The organization of the book combines a central part on the detailed chronological developments and some chapters of a more general character: chapters on theory and methodology in the beginning and on overlapping spatio-temporal topics in the end.

Book Studies in the Transmission and Reception of Old Norse Literature

Download or read book Studies in the Transmission and Reception of Old Norse Literature written by Judy Quinn and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compelling world of the Vikings and their descendants, preserved in the sagas, poetry, and mythology of medieval Iceland, has been an important source of inspiration to artists and writers across Europe, as well as to scholars devoted to editing and interpreting the manuscript texts. A variety of creative ventures have been born of the processes of imagining this distant 'hyperborean' world. The essays in this volume, by scholars from Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, and the UK, examine the scholarly and artistic reception of a variety of Old Norse texts from the beginnings of the manuscript tradition in twelfth-century Iceland to contemporary poetry, crime fiction, and graphic novels produced in Britain, Ireland, Italy, and Iceland. The influence of Old Norse literature is further explored in the context of Shakespeare's plays, eighteenth-century Italian opera, the Romantic movement in Sweden and Denmark, and the so-called 'nordic renaissance' of the late nineteenth century (including the works of August Strindberg and William Morris), as well as in some of the political movements of twentieth-century northern Europe. Interest in Old Norse literature is charted as it spread beyond intellectual centres in Europe and out to a wider reading and viewing public. The influence of the 'hyperborean muse' is evident throughout this book, as the idea of early Nordic culture has been refashioned to reflect contemporary notions and ideals.

Book Dating the Old Norse Poetic Edda

Download or read book Dating the Old Norse Poetic Edda written by Christopher D. Sapp and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers new dating of the poems of the Old Norse Poetic Edda , perhaps our best sources about the mythology and legends of the Viking Age. This study compares the anonymous Eddic poems to dated skaldic poems with respect to five phenomena that develop diachronically in early Old Norse: the expletive particle of, types of negation, word order, types of relative clause, and metrical criteria. After examining these dating features individually, the three most reliable criteria—the particle of, negation, and relative clause type—are combined into a multifactorial analysis using a Naïve Bayes Classifier. The classifier assigns a date to each Eddic poem, and these proposed dates have interesting implications for our understanding of these texts as sources for the medieval history, mythology, linguistics, and literature of the Germanic peoples. This book will have broad interdisciplinary interest, not just to historical linguists and philologists but also to scholars of Norse history, literature, and mythology.

Book Folklore in Old Norse Old Norse in Folklore

Download or read book Folklore in Old Norse Old Norse in Folklore written by Daniel Sävborg and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 20th century, Old Norse philology has been strongly textually oriented. This is evident in saga scholarship, where the book-prose ideology turned the issue of the origin of individual sagas into an issue of direct influences from other written works. This focus has methodological advantages, but it has also meant that valuable folkloristic knowledge has been neglected. The present volume targets the advantages, the problems and the methods of using folklore material and theory in Old Norse scholarship. An important theme in folklore is the encounter with the Supernatural, and such stories are indeed common in saga literature. Generally, however, scholars have tended to focus on feuds and the social structure of the sagas, and less on encounters with Otherworld beings. In this volume, the supernatural themes in the sagas are discussed by means of several approaches, some folkloristic, some traditionally philological.
