Book Old Colonial Houses in Maine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 The sketches in this volume present a brief record of some of the old colonial houses that are now standing in Maine, and that were built prior to 1776. The work does not profess to be complete in its lists, nor exhaustive in its details, but rather to describe certain buildings that represent the development of the early colonial dwelling from the ancient log garrison house and first framed cottage to the grandest of our colonial mansions, and to give, if possible, a brief glimpse into the lives of the people who converted these houses into homes. Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. If the following sketches give to the reader a characteristic picture of our early colonial homes and of the life of the men and women who dwelt therein, the mission of the book will be fulfilled. Book Old Colonial Brick Houses of New England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Colonial Brick Houses of New England Classic Reprint written by Albert J. Macdonald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colonial Brick Houses of New England On the other hand, the American architects and builders of the period, when they encountered unfamiliar problems, were able to solve them with great ingenuity. The abundance of wood and its ease of working produced a remarkable growth of wooden houses entirely different from any European type. But besides these wooden houses, brick houses were also built, though they were always less numerous, because of their greater cost. The oldest examples were built with bricks imported from England and Holland, but at a rather early period a flourishing brick-making industry grew up, particularly in the neighborhood of the larger cities. In general it may be stated that the brick houses in America follow European tradition more closely than those of wood due to the importation of much of their material, the fact that they were built in many cases by European workmen, and their location in centers of trade, usually in or near seaports where contact with Europe was more general and intimate. Salem, Newbury port, and Portsmouth, all flourishing ports in the days of the clipper ships, Show many houses of this type, while in such centers as Boston and New York they were formerly very numerous, but have largely been demolished to make way for later types of building. Of the houses here illustrated, two belong to the earlier or Jacobean type, while the others follow more or less closely Georgian models. The Cradock house at Medford, known also as the Peter Tufts house, is probably the oldest brick house standing in New England, although its traditional date, 1634, is certainly erroneous. It is definitely known that Matthew Cradock, first Gover nor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, had established a farm at Medford before this date, although he himself never visited it. But the contemporary maps, while they show a group of buildings at Medford, Show nothing on the site of the particular house in question. It seems certain, therefore, that the Cradock house was really of later date than that of tradition, and it may be stated with reasonable probability that it was built nearly half a century later. Book The Homes of Our Forefathers

Download or read book The Homes of Our Forefathers written by Edwin Whitefield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homes of Our Forefathers: Being a Selection of the Oldest and Most Interesting Historical Houses and Noted Places in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont; From Original Drawings Taken on the Spot After innumerable trials and difficulties, the full history of which would fill fifty of these pages, I have at length completed the third volume of Homes of Our Forefathers. Nearly seven years have passed away since I commenced the work. Very few persons can have any adequate idea of the time, labor and expense required to collect the materials and superintend the getting up of these books. The many weary miles I have travelled to ascertain the correct dates or the names of those who built these houses; hunting up old wills in the Probate Court; examining old deeds in the Registrar's Office; visit ing graveyards, to decipher, if possible, the date of some person's death; calling on Mr. A, B, and C, and trying to reconcile the different and often contradictory st0ries they would tell me, etc., etc., are a few of the labors incident to this undertaking. That in spite of all my efforts to be absolutely correct, there may be found some trifling errors; that some of the drawings may be slightly inaccurate in unimportant details, I am quite willing to admit, but this will surely be pardoned, for, perhaps when I was making the sketches, rain or snow was falling on my paper, or the wind was blowing a gale, and making it extremely difficult to sketch at all. And this reminds me of a question I have often been asked, and that is, why I did not take photographs of these houses. I answer that very seldom would this process have been desirable, because in very many cases, alterations and additions have been made at various times to these buildings, which I have left out, and shown them as they were originally. Then again, frequently trees hid important features of course in sketching I could leave these trees out partially or wholly. I will now say a few words in regard to the financial part of this undertaking. From first to last I have been obliged to bear the whole expense, as I could not induce any society or individual to invest money in the enterprise. That this has been a pretty heavy burden will be evident from the following statement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Old Glebe House at Woodbury and Its Historic Background Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Glebe House at Woodbury and Its Historic Background Classic Reprint written by George T. Linsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Glebe House at Woodbury and Its Historic Background The Old Glebe House in Woodbury has for years past been the property of the Diocese of. Connecticut. During these years committees have been appointed and attempts have been made from time to time to make use of the old house for philanthropic or historical purposes, but all such efforts have been unsuccessful. In November, 1922, however, Bishop Acheson appointed a new committee Whose duty it should be to make one more attempt to save this interesting house from, the decay or destruction which has, alas, swept away so many of the old colonial houses of New England. Since this new revival of interest in the house architects, after careful examination, have decided that it shows two distinct periods of construct1on. In their opinion it was originally built as a one -room house about the latter half of the seventeenth century. The porch and chimney, together with the upper and lower rooms at their left, seem to have been the original part. About 1750 the other two rooms at the right of the chimney were added together with the large kitchen which extends across the back. The Whole was then roofed over making the one typically colonial-house that we see today. The chimney is of cobble stones and uncapped the roof gambrel in front sloping in a gambrel curve at the back over the lean-to kitchen. A second lean-to and shed are now at the back of the house which are evidently a very late addition and in the restoration will be removed. The usual clump of old lilacs clusters about One corner while fine trees cast their shade over its roof. Within, much of the original panelling may still be seen and much that is very good, particularly in the lower room at the left of the porch where the election of Samuel Seabury occurred. In a closet under the stairs may be seen the sliding panel through which it is said that the royalist rector, the Rev. John Rutgers Marshall, who resided in the house at the time of the Revolution, used to slip into the cellar when surprised by his Whig enemies. Book Old Homes of New England

Download or read book Old Homes of New England written by Roderic H. Blackburn and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Homes of New England paints a stunning portrait of the charming and important old homes of the region, featuring storybook cottages in white clapboard as well ancient mansions in brick and stone. Cherished for its intimate, community-centered spirit, New England lays claim to some of the most wonderful architecture of the country—and, significantly, its buildings are among the nation’s very oldest. Featured here are twenty-five of the most beautiful examples, ranging from the storied House of the Seven Gables of 1668, in its magnificent colonial splendor, to the Corwin House of 1675, nicknamed the "Witch House" for its direct association to the infamous Salem witch trials, to the bucolic Cogswell farmhouse of 1728. Each house exemplifies its style, which range from early colonial Pilgrim, Puritan, and Shaker, to later Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival. With richly crafted interiors formed from old woods, fine plasterwork, thoughtfully set beams, brick, and stonework, the houses return us to a more gracious time when the simple pleasures of staying at home were paramount, a time to which many of us, even now, long to return.
