This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Le revers de la jaquette indique : "With the rise of museums in the 19th century, including the formation in 1824 of the National gallery in London, the art of the past became visible and accessible (in Victorian England) as never before. Inspired by the work of Sandro Botticelli, Jan van Eyck, Diego Velazquez, and others, British artists transformed contemporary art through a creative process that emphasized imitation and emulation. Elizabeth Prettejohn analyzes the ways in which the Old Masters were interpreted by artists, as well as critics, curators, and scholars, and argues that Victorian artists were, paradoxically, at their most original when they imitated the Old Masters most faithfully. Covering Victorian art from the Pre-Raphaelites through to the early modernists, she vividly traces the ways in wich artist such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, and William Orpen engaged with the art of the past to produce some of the greatest art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."

Book The Schorr collection

Download or read book The Schorr collection written by Christopher Wright and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The private Schorr collection which consists of 400 paintings was inherited by David J. Lewis which he named after his wife Hannah's family and put under the administration of his son, Howard. The collection is one of the largest of its kind of recent formation in the UK. The Lewis family started off collecting 19th century impressionist artists like Pissarro and Sisley, but then switched to old masters going back to the mid 15th century. Stylistically, within this exhibition a number of periods and tastes can be identified with an emphasis on 17th century French art, representing painters such as Sebastian Bourdon, Gaspard Dughet (the brother of Poussin's wife), Simon Vouet, Pierre Mignard and Phillipe de Champaigne.

  • Author : Susanna Avery-Quash
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Old Masters Worldwide written by Susanna Avery-Quash and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the Napoleonic wars, vast numbers of Old Master paintings were released on to the market from public and private collections across continental Europe. The knock-on effect was the growth of the market for Old Masters from the 1790s up to the early 1930s, when the Great Depression put an end to its expansion. This book explores the global movement of Old Master paintings and investigates some of the changes in the art market that took place as a result of this new interest. Arguably, the most important phenomenon was the diminishing of the traditional figure of the art agent and the rise of more visible, increasingly professional, dealerships; firms such as Colnaghi and Agnew's in Britain, Goupil in France and Knoedler in the USA, came into existence. Old Masters Worldwide explores the ways in which the pioneering practices of such businesses contributed to shape a changing market.
