Book New Hampshire Old Home Celebrations

Download or read book New Hampshire Old Home Celebrations written by Gary Crooker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1899, when many New Hampshire residents were moving to cities and other parts of the nation, Frank Rollins, soon to become governor of New Hampshire, delivered a proposal to hold an annual event he dubbed Old Home Week. Similar in form to many of the family and town picnics already a tradition throughout New Hampshire, Old Home Week was designed as an open invitation to all the former residents of the Granite State to return to the homes of their youth. In addition to the ballgames, picnics, parades, and bonfires that were held during the third week of August, the celebrations resulted in municipal improvements across the state. Old homesteads were refurbished as summer homes, and libraries and monuments sprung up throughout the region as residents returned, creating a movement toward a renewed pride in the community.

Book excerpt: Carlisle's earliest settlers lived in the northernmost part of Concord c. 1650. This community, firmly rooted in agricultural soil, became a town in 1805. In 1900, the population was four hundred eighty, comprised mostly of farm families. By 1960, only five large farms remained, and the population had soared to fifteen hundred. Although Carlisle's agricultural days are over, three working farms, many historic barns scattered through town, and the area's only cranberry bog echo its rural past. With its town meeting government, town common, steepled churches, and vast conservation lands, Carlisle reflects the best of New England small-town life.

Book Dryden s Second Hundred Years

Download or read book Dryden s Second Hundred Years written by Elizabeth Gutchess and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dryden's Second Hundred Years (Part I) chronicles life in a small farming village in Central New York during the first half of the twentieth century. But along with a close reading of the local scene-its telephones, roads, real and rumored milk strikes, and letters back home from the trenches of two wars-this narrative has a wide arc and rich texture: author Elizabeth Denver Gutchess dovetails local history with national and international events which shaped and countered it-as she explores connections and disconnections between this small community and the world at large. Essentially, in fact, Dryden's Second Hundred Years records a transformation of place, as Dryden's tightly woven social fabric slowly unraveled during the century, while ever-lengthening strands of road and cable reached farther and farther beyond this small hill-rimmed valley-weaving ever wider and more life-enhancing communities for the people who live here. At a time when the process of globalization outweighs all things local, however, it is important to keep balance. The global village, as many have warned, will be enriched not by neglecting the local but by taking care of it. One way to do that is simply to know and understand the local past. Like the body of fine work already produced by Dryden historians-and by local historians everywhere-this book might help us do that.

Book Meredith Chronicles

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Heyduk
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 1626197636
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Meredith Chronicles written by Daniel Heyduk and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient beginnings only hinted at the great things to come in the story of Meredith. The earliest residents hunted mammoth and caribou and created the first birch-bark canoe to traverse Lake Winnipesaukee and the network of waterways. Centuries later, Meredith's Dudley Leavitt wrote Leavitt's Farmers Almanack for more than fifty years. The local woods were the solitary home of Joseph Plumer, who was perhaps New Hampshire's most financially successful hermit. Motorcycles, cars and horses once raced on the winter ice of Lake Winnipesaukee. Together, these stories weave the distinctive fabric of Meredith history. Dan Heyduk's town history goes beyond documents and dates, illustrating the unique character of a multifaceted community.
