Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Fort Sandoski and the De Lery Portage: Erection of Historical Tablets on Memorial Day, May 30, 1912 at Port Clinton, Ohio Local history has its renascence in tradition, which passes along from generation to generation hints of names and adven tures, which appeal at last to some student of the past and send him forth in quest of sources. Such traditions have long lingered about the little peninsula at Port Clinton, in Ottawa County, Ohio: traditions of venturesome French monks and traders; of an ancient fort, destroyed and rebuilt and destroyed again; of British redcoats and Rangers, Pontiac's savages and Dalyell the avenger; of Bradstreet; and finally of William Henry Harrison building a brush fence to corral several thousand war horses, while their riders sailed away on the ships of Commodore Per ry to finish, on the banks of the Canadian Thames, the one vic torious military campaign of the second American war with Great Britain. The wealth of recent discoveries bestirred by such tra ditions materialized in the recent erection of two simple but handsome monuments bearing six historical tablets which were unveiled with interesting ceremonies at Port Clinton, on Memor ial Day, May 30, 1912. Two pyramidal monuments of boulders stand two miles apart, at either end of what is known as the de Lery Portage of formerly Fulton Street and Road; the one marking the site of Old Fort Sandoski of 1745, faces Sandusky Bay, oppo site the mouth of the Sandusky River; the other the Harrison Perry Embarkation monument, overlooks Lake Erie near the old mouth of the Portage River. These termini, together with the short land portage connecting them, teem with history as absorbing as any in this country; and it is most appropriate and gratifying that they are finally worthily 'marked, and their story narrated in enduring bronze for every passerlby to read. Not only did its factories keep pace with the transportation industry, but the Ohio city also boasted the headquarters of international paper maker Hinde and Dauch and enough crayon production to be called the "Color Capital of the World." The amusement park at Cedar Point helped launch a new form of entertainment that continues today. But while the town remains a vacation destination and retains some heavy industry, it misses much of its former glory. Join M. Kristina Smith in revisiting those landmarks of Sandusky's past.

Accounts arrived that the Delawares and Shawanese are assembled at Sandusky where the old Fort stood that the Indians burnt last year, a bad place for the boats. The whole set sail and arrived at Thistle Creek about one mile and three-quarters to the eastward of it, but the water failing returned and encamped a half mile to the westward of the old Fort. As the nations expected to ratify the treaty propose taking the route of the upper village of the Hurons 60 miles from the first rapids on the river of Sandusky, the whole embarked and proceeded and encamped one mile below the rapids in order to meet them one day sooner and also to be so much nearer to attack their villages on the Ohio should they not comply with every article alluded to in the treaty of peace. This book was released on 2016-09-25 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Fort Sandoski of 1745 and the "Sandusky Country" Montreal. Father Sagard was the first historian of the mission, and is authority for the statement that the Hurons were in the habit of sending large war parties to ravage the country of the Iroquois. The hostility between them dated from prehistoric times, so that the invasion and destruction of the Huron country in 164850 by the Iroquois was but the final blow in a struggle of almost 100 years. The acquisition of firearms by the Iroquois from the Dutch while the Hurons had almost none, was an important factor in the success of the Iroquois. Hundreds of Hurons were carried captive to the Iroquois country; others escaped to their kindred the Neutrals and the Eries; and others took refuge at Green Bay - where the Ottawas joined them; later on the south shore of Lake Superior, and again at Mackinac island. In 1670 we find a remnant of them in the palisaded village of St. Ignace. Later some of the Hurons moved to Detroit, and thence to the San dusky country, in Ohio. Mention was made of a kindred tribe of the Hurons, the Neutral Nation. Tradition has it that long before the settlement in the San dusky Valley of the fugitive Hurons, the Neutral 'nation had at Lower Sandusky (fremont) two fortified neutral towns, on opposite sides of the Sandusky river, which in the shape of earthworks were observed by the pioneer residents of Fremont.
