Download or read book The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs written by Julia Bishop and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Spectator's Books of the Year 2012 'Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain For we've received orders for to sail for old England But we hope in a short while to see you again' One of the great English popular art forms, the folk song can be painful, satirical, erotic, dramatic, rueful or funny. They have thrived when sung on a whim to a handful of friends in a pub; they have bewitched generations of English composers who have set them for everything from solo violin to full orchestra; they are sung in concerts, festivals, weddings, funerals and with nobody to hear but the singer. This magical new collection brings together all the classic folk songs as well as many lesser-known discoveries, complete with music and annotations on their original sources and meaning. Published in cooperation with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, it is a worthy successor to Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L.Lloyd's original Penguin Book of English Folk Songs. 'Her keen eye did glitter like the bright stars by night The robe she was wearing was costly and white Her bare neck was shaded with her long raven hair And they called her pretty Susan, the pride of Kildare' In association with EFDSS, the English Folk Dance and Song Society

Book English Folk Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Folk Songs Classic Reprint written by R Vaughan Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk-Songs We have been rather late in the day in England in doing what other nations have long considered their duty. But this has not been altogether a disadvantage; most of the folk music of foreign countries, and much of that of Scotland, Wales and Ireland, was collected and published about 120 years ago, a period when musicians had no respect for what they found, and had no scruple in altering and improving their folk songs to make them fit the supposed correct style of the period thus none of the tunes of these early collectors are above suspicion as faithful records. But nowadays a new spirit animates the collector he wishes to preserve and put before the public exactly what he has heard - neither more nor less - and we can be sure that what ever we find in the collections of modern investigators is an accurate transcript of the songs of traditional singers. Book History of English Music Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of English Music Classic Reprint written by Henry Davey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Music A Few words concerning the origin of this book are necessary. It was already begun during an illness in 1892, and arrangements were made for its publication. But upon further investigation, especially of the early MSS., I perceived that the wealth of most valuable material still unexamined was far greater than I had suspected; so great, in fact, as to modify my previous opinions concerning English music in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. What I had previously written had largely to be rejected, and the whole plan of the work was altered; while three years' study has been necessary before I could let the book be printed. A variety of accidents unfortunately prevented a systematic comparison of every proof-sheet with the original sources of information, a test I had intended to apply; should any mistakes have arisen thereby, they will be duly published as they are discovered, and corrected in future editions. The main hindrance, in this and other respects, has, of course, been my living away from London and the other great repositories of MSS.; but I am able in consequence to have a clearer view of the condition of music in the whole country, of our defects and their causes, than I should probably have acquired had I been a London musician, when it would have been difficult or impossible for me to perceive the effects of centralisation upon our musical life. A minor but a very real hindrance has been the unsystematic indexing of many important publications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book English Folk Song Some Conclusions Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Folk Song Some Conclusions Classic Reprint written by Cecil James Sharp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk Song, Some Conclusions The question, too, admits of no doubt. Folk-songs, genuinely and demonstrably English, have already been gathered in their hundreds, and of a quality at least as remarkable as their number. The work of collection, too, on any comprehensive scale, has only just begun. The larger part of rural England is still virgin soil; while of those districts that have already been visited, very few have, as yet, been explored-with any degree of thoroughness. The future, therefore, may hold still greater surprises in store for us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
