Download or read book Port Cities of the Eastern Mediterranean written by Malte Fuhrmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Mediterranean port cities, such as Constantinople, Smyrna, and Salonica, have long been sites of fascination. Known for their vibrant and diverse populations, the dynamism of their economic and cultural exchanges, and their form of relatively peaceful co-existence in a turbulent age, many would label them as models of cosmopolitanism. In this study, Malte Fuhrmann examines changes in the histories of space, consumption, and identities in the nineteenth and early twentieth century while the Mediterranean became a zone of influence for European powers. Giving voice to the port cities' forgotten inhabitants, Fuhrmann explores how their urban populations adapted to European practices, how entertainment became a marker of a Europeanized way of life, and consuming beer celebrated innovation, cosmopolitanism and mixed gender sociability. At the same time, these adaptations to a European way of life were modified according to local needs, as was the case for the new quays, streets, and buildings. Revisiting leisure practises as well as the formation of class, gender, and national identities, Fuhrmann offers an alternative view on the relationship between the Islamic World and Europe.

Download or read book Workmanship written by Klaus-Dieter Weiss and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: today, the name RKW Architektur + Städtebau evokes two hundred architects whose work never fails to convince. The reason does not lie in the narrowly defined architectural language of individual leaders of the firm. More than in any other firm, the various teams are given generous latitude for independent initiative. Thus, this documentation of the last ten years, with cross - references to the development of this unique partnership since 1950, doesn’t just present sixty - five structures and projects from an internationally sought - after firm. On the contrary, in its search for the secret of the firm’s success, it looks behind the scenes in numerous interviews and essays. The works considered range from the research facilities for AUDI, the new sciences campus of RWTH Aachen University, and the corporate headquarters of Vodafone, Debitel, and Arag to urban revitalization projects, residential buildings, schools, sports halls, railroad stations, city halls, banks, urban office buildings and shopping centers, and the stadium for the 2012 European Soccer Championship in Gdansk.
Download or read book Mediterranean Encounters written by Fariba Zarinebaf and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean Encounters traces the layered history of Galata—a Mediterranean and Black Sea port—to the Ottoman conquest, and its transformation into a hub of European trade and diplomacy as well as a pluralist society of the early modern period. Framing the history of Ottoman-European encounters within the institution of ahdnames (commercial and diplomatic treaties), this thoughtful book offers a critical perspective on the existing scholarship. For too long, the Ottoman empire has been defined as an absolutist military power driven by religious conviction, culturally and politically apart from the rest of Europe, and devoid of a commercial policy. By taking a close look at Galata, Fariba Zarinebaf provides a different approach based on a history of commerce, coexistence, competition, and collaboration through the lens of Ottoman legal records, diplomatic correspondence, and petitions. She shows that this port was just as cosmopolitan and pluralist as any large European port and argues that the Ottoman world was not peripheral to European modernity but very much part of it.

Book excerpt: “The Sphere” - is a novel by Corneel Booysen. The book describes the physical, emotional and spiritual journey of a character named Victor that relocates to a foreign country with his family. While the book initially describes the journey from a physical perspective and occasionally dwells on the emotional aspects associated with relocation, it quickly turns into a deeper spiritual and emotional journey as the family joins an organization called the Sphere. At first the family is overjoyed as they are immersed in a friendly and loving community. For a period they experience a deep sense of belonging and revel in their perceived personal growth, but several troublesome incidents and inconsistencies in the organization eventually leads to a growing feeling of cognitive dissonance. Attempts to find answers lead Victor down a path of disillusion, rejection and ultimately isolation as he unearths the real motivations of the organization he once held so dear. At times the style of the narrative represents a literary abstract painting as the author wields the colors of the bizarre and the brush of symbolism to illustrate spiritual character progression that is perched on a canvas of evolving circumstances. Ultimately the book puts the reader into the same position as the main character - where every person is challenged with the same deep existential and spiritual questions regarding faith and organized religion.

Download or read book Modernizing Main Street written by Gabrielle Esperdy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important part of the New Deal, the Modernization Credit Plan helped transform urban business districts and small-town commercial strips across 1930s America, but it has since been almost completely forgotten. In Modernizing Main Street, Gabrielle Esperdy uncovers the cultural history of the hundreds of thousands of modernized storefronts that resulted from the little-known federal provision that made billions of dollars available to shop owners who wanted to update their facades. Esperdy argues that these updated storefronts served a range of complex purposes, such as stimulating public consumption, extending the New Deal’s influence, reviving a stagnant construction industry, and introducing European modernist design to the everyday landscape. She goes on to show that these diverse roles are inseparable, woven together not only by the crisis of the Depression, but also by the pressures of bourgeoning consumerism. As the decade’s two major cultural forces, Esperdy concludes, consumerism and the Depression transformed the storefront from a seemingly insignificant element of the built environment into a potent site for the physical and rhetorical staging of recovery and progress.
