Book John X ntus

Download or read book John X ntus written by Ann Zwinger and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Xántus was a bit of a charlatan; of that there is little doubt. He lied about his exploits, joined the U.S. Army under an assumed name, and managed to alienate most of the people he met. Yet this Hungarian immigrant became one of the Smithsonian Institution’s most successful collectors of natural history specimens in the mid-nineteenth century, and he is credited with the discovery of many new species in the American West. From his station at Ft. Tejon in California’s Tehachapi Mountains, Xántus carried on a lengthy correspondence with Spencer Baird at the Smithsonian, to whom he shipped the specimens he had trapped or shot in the surrounding sierra and deserts. A prolific letter writer, Xántus faithfully reported his findings as he bemoaned his circumstances and worried about his future. Working from Smithsonian archives, natural history writer Ann Zwinger has assembled Xántus’s unpublished letters into a book that documents his trials and triumphs in the field and reveals much about his dubious character. The letters also bring to life a time and place on the western frontier from which Xántus was able to observe a broad panorama of American history in the making. Zwinger’s lively introduction sets the stage for Xántus’s correspondence and examines the apparent contradictions between the man’s personal and professional lives. Her detailed notes to the letters further clarify his discoveries and shed additional light on his checkered career.

Download or read book Forts of the West written by Robert Walter Frazer and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1965 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number and variety of forts and posts, together with changes of location, name, and designation, have posed perplexing problems for students of western history. Now Robert W. Frazer has prepared a systematic listing of all presidios and military forts, which were ever, at any time and in any sense, so designated. The lists of posts are arranged alphabetically within the boundaries of present states. Pertinent information is included for each fort: date of establishment, location, and reason for establishment; name, rank, and military unit of the person establishing the post; origin of the post name and changes in name and location; present status or date of abandonment; and disposition of any existing military reservation. A map for each state shows the location of the posts discussed. A prime reference for historians, Forts of the West will prove useful to readers of western history as well.

Book Bringing Them Under Subjection

Download or read book Bringing Them Under Subjection written by George Harwood Phillips and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final book in a three-volume history of California's Native peoples, "Bringing Them under Subjection" chronicles the development and demise of the state's first permanent reservation, the Sebastian Military Reserve, better known as the Tej¢n Reservation. George Harwood Phillips explains how local Native peoples were instrumental in the initial success of the reservation and how the institution was undermined by squatters and a Native policy emphasizing caution over innovation. Because the scope of the study encompasses most of the San Joaquin Valley in central California, events related to but unfolding beyond the reservation are also given considerable attention, in particular the founding and functioning of quasi reservations called "Indian farms," the resistance offered by Native peoples in the southern valley, the degradation they underwent in the gold fields, and the survival of their progeny to the present.Drawing upon Native oral testimony and the accounts of state and federal officials, military officers, newspaper reporters, settlers, miners, and ranchers, Phillips provides a detailed and balanced account of a volatile period in California history.George Harwood Phillips is a professor emeritus of history at the University of Colorado. He is the author of several books about California Native peoples, including the first two volumes in this series: Indians and Intruders in Central California, 17691849 and Indians and Indian Agents: The Origins of the Reservation System in California, 18491852 .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in Kevin Starr's passionate and ambitious cultural history of the Golden State focuses on the turn-of-the-century years and the emergence of Southern California as a regional culture in its own right. "How hauntingly beautiful, how replete with lost possibilities, seems that Southern California of two and three generations ago, now that a dramatically diferent society has emerged in its place," writes Starr. As he recreates the "lost California," Starr examines the rich variety of elements that figured in the growth of the Southern California way of life: the Spanish/Mexican roots, the fertile land, the Mediterranean-like climate, the special styles in architecture, the rise of Hollywood. He gives us a broad array of engaging (and often eccentric) characters: from Harrision Gray Otis to Helen Hunt Jackson to Cecil B. DeMille. Whether discussing the growth of winemaking or the burgeoning of reform movements, Starr keeps his central theme in sharp focus: how Californians defined their identity to themselves and to the nation.

Forty years after its original publication, University of California Press proudly reissues California Grizzly, still the most comprehensive book on the bear's history in California. The lessons of the book resonate today as the issues of protection of wildlife habitat versus unfettered development of land for human use are debated with increasing urgency.
