Download or read book Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality written by Federal-Provincial Subcommittee on Drinking Water (Canada) and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editions of these guidelines are prepared following a thorough review of the scientific, technical and medical literature on new parameters and on parameters whose guidelines require revision. This 6th edition includes the guidelines approved by the Conference of Deputy Ministers of Health as of March 1995. No evidence has been presented that would warrant changing the values proposed in the last edition. These values have, therefore, been adopted and are presented in this edition as confirmed guidelines. The guidelines and recommendations listed are intended to apply to all drinking water supplies, public and private, however, they should not be regarded as legally enforceable standards unless promulgated as such by the appropriate agency. This document provides an explanation of terms, a description of microbiological characteristics, chemical and physical parameters, and radiological characteristics. It also includes a list of parameters under review or scheduled for review.
Download or read book Climate Change and Water written by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change / Working Group Technical Support Unit and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Technical Paper addresses the issue of freshwater. Sealevel rise is dealt with only insofar as it can lead to impacts on freshwater in coastal areas and beyond. Climate, freshwater, biophysical and socio-economic systems are interconnected in complex ways. Hence, a change in any one of these can induce a change in any other. Freshwater-related issues are critical in determining key regional and sectoral vulnerabilities. Therefore, the relationship between climate change and freshwater resources is of primary concern to human society and also has implications for all living species. -- page vii.
Download or read book The Archive of Place written by William Turkel and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archive of Place weaves together a series of narratives about environmental history in a particular location British Columbia's Chilcotin Plateau. In the mid-1990s, the Chilcotin was at the centre of three territorial conflicts. Opposing groups, in their struggle to control the fate of the region and its resources, invoked different understandings of its past and different types of evidence to justify their actions. These controversies serve as case studies, as William Turkel examines how people interpret material traces to reconstruct past events, the conditions under which such interpretation takes place, and the role that this interpretation plays in historical consciousness and social memory. It is a wide-ranging and original study that extends the span of conventional historical research.

Download or read book The Neoliberal State Recognition and Indigenous Rights written by Deirdre Howard-Wagner and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of neoliberal governance on indigenous peoples in liberal settler states may be both enabling and constraining. This book is distinctive in drawing comparisons between three such states—Australia, Canada and New Zealand. In a series of empirically grounded, interpretive micro-studies, it draws out a shared policy coherence, but also exposes idiosyncrasies in the operational dynamics of neoliberal governance both within each state and between them. Read together as a collection, these studies broaden the debate about and the analysis of contemporary government policy. The individual studies reveal the forms of actually existing neoliberalism that are variegated by historical, geographical and legal contexts and complex state arrangements. At the same time, they present examples of a more nuanced agential, bottom-up indigenous governmentality. Focusing on intense and complex matters of social policy rather than on resource development and land rights, they demonstrate how indigenous actors engage in trying to govern various fields of activity by acting on the conduct and contexts of everyday neoliberal life, and also on the conduct of state and corporate actors.
Download or read book Public Health Ethics Cases Spanning the Globe written by Drue H. Barrett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book highlights the ethical issues and dilemmas that arise in the practice of public health. It is also a tool to support instruction, debate, and dialogue regarding public health ethics. Although the practice of public health has always included consideration of ethical issues, the field of public health ethics as a discipline is a relatively new and emerging area. There are few practical training resources for public health practitioners, especially resources which include discussion of realistic cases which are likely to arise in the practice of public health. This work discusses these issues on a case to case basis and helps create awareness and understanding of the ethics of public health care. The main audience for the casebook is public health practitioners, including front-line workers, field epidemiology trainers and trainees, managers, planners, and decision makers who have an interest in learning about how to integrate ethical analysis into their day to day public health practice. The casebook is also useful to schools of public health and public health students as well as to academic ethicists who can use the book to teach public health ethics and distinguish it from clinical and research ethics.

Download or read book Okanagan Area Hydraulic Creek and Its Tributaries Water Quality Assessment and Objectives written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous investigations have determined that water quality in Hydraulic Creek, located near Kelowna, British Columbia, was being affected by logging. This has prompted the environment ministry to establish water quality objectives for the protection of existing water uses in the creek. This report first reviews the extent of logging in the creek watershed, the hydrology of the creek, and the creek's water uses. The main section presents ambient water quality data for the creek for 1983 & 1985-88, focussing on those characteristics that are most affected by logging and which may impact designated water uses (including potable water supply and water for aquatic life). These characteristics include turbidity, suspended solids, colour, nitrogen, phosphorus, temperature, and bacteria. Provisional water quality objectives are recommended for each parameter that was found to exceed or be near criteria levels for designated water uses. The final section makes recommendations for water quality monitoring.
Download or read book The Sea Among Us written by Richard James Beamish and published by Harbour Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strait of Georgia is a one of the world's great inland seas, a 6,900 sq km body of water lying between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. Rich in history, teeming with wildlife and marine traffic, it is essential to British Columbians for food, jobs, travel and recreation. The sheltered waters of the strait are home to Canada's largest seaport and over two-thirds of the province's population. The Sea Among Us is the first book to present a comprehensive study of the Strait of Georgia in all its aspects with chapters on geology, First Nations, history, oceanography, fish, birds, mammals, invertebrates and plants. Covering everything from tsunami modelling to First Nations history to barnacle reproduction, the book is a sweeping overview of the waterway. It describes how fjords formed, what the seafloor is made of, and why coastal BC is so prone to earthquakes; it advises on which jellyfish sting, how to tell the difference between Dall's and harbour porpoises, and where to find whales; and it addresses how climate change and human impacts could affect the strait, noting that though marine ecosystems are tough and adaptable, there are limits to this resiliency. As editor Dr. Richard Beamish says, "It is the function of this book to inform British Columbians about the Strait of Georgia. All authors hope that the readers will use the information to ask questions about how the Strait of Georgia is coping with change and how they can provide more of the information that is needed to maintain a healthy Strait of Georgia." Informative, descriptive, cautionary and entertaining, The Sea Among Us is illustrated with attractive colour photographs, figures and drawings. It fills a place on the shelf of essential BC reference books beside The Encyclopedia of British Columbia and Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest.
