Book The Flower of Youth

Download or read book The Flower of Youth written by Mary di Michele and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a kind of historical narrative in verse, the poems in this collection depict the coming of age and sexual awareness of the great Italian writer and film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini. The time of this story is World War II; the place is German-occupied northern Italy. Unlike his younger brother, Guido, who took up arms to fight in the resistance, Pasolini chose to help his mother set up a school for the boys too young to fight or be conscripted. The situation ignited an internal war for the young Pasolini that nearly eclipsed the historical moment: a battle within between his desire for boys and his Catholic faith and culture. In addition to the poems that juxtapose Pasolini’s struggle against the backdrop of political and cultural fascism, the book also includes a prologue and an epilogue that details the author’s pilgrimage to the site and her research into the time that shaped Pasolini as a man and as an artist.

Book Beyond Feminist Aesthetics

Download or read book Beyond Feminist Aesthetics written by Rita Felski and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felski presents a critical account of current American and European feminist literary theory, and analyzes contemporary fiction by women to show that no theorist can identify a specifically "female" or "feminine" kind of writing without reference to what gender means at a given historical moment. She argues that the idea of a feminist aesthetic is a non-issue needlessly pursued by feminists. She calls for a consideration of the social and cultural context in which these texts were produced and received, and demonstrates her method of an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of literature which can integrate literary and social theory. Book Unbecoming Women

Download or read book Unbecoming Women written by Susan Fraiman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unbecoming Women unpacks the ideological baggage of the Bildungsroman and turns to conduct books and novels of development by women for a new poetics of growing up. In subtle readings of works by Frances Burney, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and George Eliot, Fraiman argues that a heroine's progress toward masterful selfhood is by no means assured. Focusing on counternarratives in which girls do not enter the world so much as flounder on its doorstep, Fraiman suggests that becoming a woman involves de-formation, disorientation, and the loss of authority. Written with grace and theoretical mastery, Unbecoming Women emphasises the dialectical as well as subversive aspects of a genre long considered homogeneous. The result is a compelling contribution to feminist genre criticism that, charting female destiny in Georgian and Victorian texts, also postmodernizes the novel of development.
