Book The Energy Path of Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book The Energy Path of Latin America and the Caribbean written by Rigoberto Ariel Yépez-García and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rapid energy growth in the past 40 years, the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region has maintained a steady increase in electricity needs above the global level. While there is no question that demand will remain strong over the next two decades, what remains to be seen is what kind of energy matrix will be used to meet that appetite and what will be the investments going into the industry. This report makes an attempt to answer these critical questions by taking a deep look into the demand and supply side of the industry. To this end, it will seek to (i) identify the amount of demand growth until 2040, (ii) project the electricity generation matrix by each energy source, and (iii) determine the investment requirements by source, based on cost efficiency criteria, for regulators and utilities’ consideration.

After two decades of market-based reforms, followed by a political backlash against the market, Latin American governments now demonstrate a diverse range of approaches to the role of the state in energy policy. As the region develops and its middle class grows, the tension between increased energy demand and heightened environmental concerns will increasingly determine the future of Latin American energy development. Book The Impact of Natural Resource Discoveries in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book The Impact of Natural Resource Discoveries in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Mr.Frederik G Toscani and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the impact of natural resource extraction in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) from a number of angles. First, we exploit a novel dataset on the universe of giant oil and gas discoveries in the region to trace out the cyclical response of macroeconomic variables to discoveries over the short- and medium-run. Second, we use non-stationary panel data techniques to look at the long-run (trend) relationship between GDP per capita and the value of oil and gas production—our results imply that the recent fall in prices could depress GDP per capita by several percentage points. Last, we use Bolivia, which discovered huge gas reserves in the late 1990s, as a case study to apply the cross-country results and to study the impact of discoveries at the subnational level.

Book Contested Powers

Download or read book Contested Powers written by John-Andrew McNeish and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the global North the commoditization of creativity and knowledge under the banner of a creative economy is being posed as the post-industrial answer to dependency on labour and natural resources. Not only does it promise a more stable and sustainable future, but an economy focused on intellectual property is more environmentally friendly, so it is suggested. Contested Powers argues that the fixes being offered by this model are bluffs; development as witnessed in Latin American energy politics and governance remains hindered by a global division of labour and nature that puts the capacity for technological advancement in private hands. The authors call for a multi-layered understanding of sovereignty, arguing that it holds the key to undermining rigid accounts of the relationship between carbon and democracy, energy and development, and energy and political expression. Furthermore, a critical focus on energy politics is crucial to wider debates on development and sustainability. Contested Powers is essential reading for those wondering how energy resources are converted into political power and why we still value the energy we take from our surroundings more than the means of its extraction.
