Book excerpt: He's the beast, and she's the beauty of his past. After twelve years in the league, all Zach Murphy wants is a Championship ring. His focus has been on hard hits–not smooth manners; about breaking quarterbacks–not making small talk at cocktail parties. After dumping a tray of drinks on the team owner’s daughter and accidentally feeling up the governor’s wife, his tenure with his team looks perilously short. Kelsie Carrington-Richmond knows what it's like to fall from grace. A onetime beauty pageant star and former high-school mean girl, she's now destitute and one step from living out of her car. With few real job skills, she focuses on starting her new business, Charm School for Real Men. She's thrilled to land her first clients, the Seattle Steelheads, who have hired her to polish their roughest player. Except…it’s Zach. The same guy whose broken heart she left in her wake when she was still a mean girl. He’s just the beast she remembers—but she’s nothing like the beauty queen she once was. Can they get beyond their pasts? Or will they both find themselves offsides? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never saw him coming. My life goals include working with athletes—not dating them. Even though all my friends seem to be hooking up with Wildcats players these days, that wasn’t in the cards for me. Then I met Finn McCabe. The big D-lineman is a padded-up ad for sin—surprisingly sweet, scary-smart, a little awkward, and far too hot for my own good. Too bad he has questionable taste in women . . . With the game on the line . . . Timing that first step for a free shot at the quarterback is always my focus. The trick is not to jump too soon and be called for offsides. Unfortunately, I forgot the rules when it comes to hooking up with the perfect girl. Everything with Chessly Clarke is moving exactly on time until a certain group of jersey chasers shows up and flags the play. Timing is everything. The moment I look into Chessly’s dark blue eyes, I’m a goner. Then I jumped offsides. Playing football for a national championship-caliber team, I know the rewards for hard work, and Chess is worth everything I’m willing to do for a second chance. She’s a little nerdy, a lot sexy, and she ties me up in knots. She thinks she knows the score, but I’m focused on winning her heart. Game Time.

Download or read book Offsides written by Rene A. Henry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-07-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should owners and coaches allow players who perform on the field to abuse women, drugs and alcohol off the field? Where are the role models in professional football today? Why do officials miss calls? What calls do they miss most? Is instant replay the answer? Are the TV announcers always right? Why should the public pay to build stadiums for profit-minded owners? Are the NFL officials as experienced as they should be? Fred Wyant, who spent 19 of his 27 years as an official in the National Football League as a referee, answers these and other questions in Offsides! Author Rene A. Henry interviewed Mike Ditka, Don Shula, Sam Huff, Lou Holtz, Peter Ueberroth, Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, the late Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Marv Levy, Kellen Winslow, owners Michael Brown and Dan Rooney and referees Jim Tunney and Red Cashion, and many other players, coaches and officials. Their comments reinforce what Wyant has to say. Wyant also was the only referee in the NFL to also play quarterback in the league. The cover photograph of Vince Lombardi screaming at Wyant was taken by Wally McNamee and was picked as the "Best of the Year" by the White House News Press Photographers Association. The book is filled with humorous anecdotes and also details the responsibility of each of the seven officials and how each member of the crew is challenged with more than 1,500 decisions in a game. It also is G-rated with no profanity.

Book I Can t Stop Thinking About VAR

Download or read book I Can t Stop Thinking About VAR written by Daisy Christodoulou and published by Swift Press. This book was released on 2024-11-07 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it football any more? 'Everyone involved in the VAR controversy should read this short, beautifully-written book and think again' Sir Michael Barber In 2019, the English Premier League introduced the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), a way of using technology to review and correct the on-field referee's decisions. It's been a disaster: players hate it, managers hate it, pundits line up to pour scorn on its decisions, and fans have coined the chant 'it's not football any more' to describe its effect on the game. Almost every other sport in the world has managed to integrate technology into its decision-making process. Why is football failing so badly? Is it a special case, or have the game's authorities got something wrong? And what does the controversy about VAR tell us about the nature of authority, rationality and technology in the 21st century?

Book excerpt: A compendium of poetry, stories and philosophy written between 1050 B.C. and 27909 A.D. which has a semi-autobiographical feel. A feeling of paranoia surges through the veins of this literary effort. From juxtaposed perspectives we interpret life on our sexy planet and others, judging it if only because it is in our nature to judge, appraise and therefore obtain opinion if not knowledge itself. In addition to which there is a rude joke about a pig, sci-fi from 1,000 millennia ago, morphine-laden ruminations on the nature of animals, a comedy sketch where the entire gag is based upon a simple yet versatile pun, and a tender, hearty section on adolescent lust. And then some.

Book Morality and Socially Constructed Norms

Download or read book Morality and Socially Constructed Norms written by Laura Valentini and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observe social distancing. Tip your waiter. Give priority to the elderly. Stop at the red light. Pay your taxes. Do not chew with your mouth open. These are imperatives we face every day, imposed upon us by norms that happen to be generally accepted in our environment. Call these 'socially constructed norms'. A constant presence in our lives, these norms elicit mixed feelings. On the one hand, we treat them as valid standards of behaviour and respond to their violation with emotions such disapproval, resentment, and guilt. On the other hand, we look at them with suspicion: after all, they are arbitrary human constructs that may contribute to oppression and injustice. In light of this ambivalence, it is important to have a criterion telling us when, if ever, we are morally bound by socially constructed norms and when we should instead disregard them. Morality and Socially Constructed Norms systematically develops such a criterion. It traces the moral significance of those norms to the agential commitments that underpin them, and explains why those commitments ought to be respected, provided the content of the corresponding norms is consistent with independent moral constraints. The book then explores the implications of this view for three core questions in moral, legal, and political philosophy: the grounding of moral rights, the obligation to obey the law, and the wrong of sovereignty violations. Morality and Socially Constructed Norms shows how much progress can be made in normative theorizing when we give socially constructed norms their (moral) due.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Here to Diversity: Globalization and Intercultural Dialogues sees interculturalism as movement, transit, travel, and the dynamics between cultures. Contemporary intercultural travel is a global journey, a circumnavigation at the speed of light that underwrites all the comings and goings, the departures and arrivals, the transmissions and receptions that are implicit in this title. Hence, From Here to Diversity examines the motivations, characteristics and implications of cultural interactions in their perpetual movement, devoid of spatial or temporal borders, in a dangerous but stimulating indefinition of limits. In the contemporary intercultural dialogue, new voices are making themselves heard, as valuable sources of study: the voices of women; non-occidentals; the non-powerful; forgotten narratives of a past that was as intercultural as the present (after all, what is colonialism other than a perverse form of interculturality?); global entertainment; tourism; oral literature; diaries; mythical narratives; the cinema; ethnography; and new teachings, among so many others. Because this project is also intercultural at its source and subject, From Here to Diversity: Globalization and Intercultural Dialogues adds to the coherence of the project by including contributions from the most wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities, without fear of the alterity that, after all, we propose to study.

Book Film Bodies

  • Author : Katharina Lindner
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2017-10-16
  • ISBN : 1838608559
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book Film Bodies written by Katharina Lindner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representation of gender and sexuality is well-explored territory in film studies. In Film Bodies, Katharina Lindner takes existing debates into a new direction and integrates queer and feminist theory with film phenomenology. Drawing on a broad range of sources, Lindner explores the female body's presence in a range of genres including the dance film, the sports film and queer cinema. Moving across mainstream and independent cinema, Lindner provides detailed 'textural' analyses of Black Swan, The Tango Lesson, 2 Seconds, Offside, Tomboy and Girlhood and discusses the queer feminist encounters these films can give rise to. This provocative book is of vital interest to students and researchers of queer cinema, queer/feminist theory, embodiment and affect and offers a unique new way of understanding the relationship between queerness, feminism, the body and cinema.
