Book Official Records of Pure Bred Dairy Cows Classic Reprint

Download or read book Official Records of Pure Bred Dairy Cows Classic Reprint written by C. C. Hayden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Records of Pure-Bred Dairy Cows There are in Illinois over cows used for dairy pur poses, of which not over two percent are pure-brecl, and of only a fraction of one percent have accurate records of production been kept either officially or privately. Many dairymen are now add ing to their herds a few pure - bred animals as the beginning of pure - brerl herds, and still larger numbers are using pure - bred sires on grade herds. These are certainly steps in the right direction. Every possible means should be used to raise the average pro duction of dairy cows. Not all persons can have pure-brecl ani mals, but all can use good bulls to grade up their herds, and on of the best ways to convince a man of the value of well - bred stock is to demonstrate to him the effect of a pure-bretl sire on a grade herd. It should be considered little less than a crime to use a scrub' bull, or one whose dam has not produced 300 pounds of butter fat in 365 days. Had careful selection and breeding been practiced for the past sixty years by the dairymen of northern Illinois, that part of the state would' have been known the world over on ac'count of the ex cellence of its dairy cattle. During that time fifteen generations could have been produced, and fifteen generations under careful selection would have worked wonders. Very little concerted action has been taken by even the breeders of pure bred cattle to advance the interests of their respective breeds In some states there are associations for the different breeds, and numerous county or local associations. Wisconsin has about twenty-nine such associations which are doing a great work. Similar organizations sho'uld occupy a more prominent place in Illinois dairying. The herd books show that only a small part of the men owning pure - bred cattle in the state are members of even their national breed associations. The Dairy Cattle Improvement Association of Illinois was organized in 1908, and consisted of men representingthe different dairy breeds The object was to promote the spread of pure -bred cattle in the state and especially the use of pure-b-red bulls on grade herds. Book Measuring the Breeding Value of Dairy Sires by the Records of Their First Few Advanced Registry Daughters Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measuring the Breeding Value of Dairy Sires by the Records of Their First Few Advanced Registry Daughters The breeding value of dairy sires lies mainly in their ability to transmit to their offspring factors for high milk and butterfat produc tion. The fact that all sires are not equal in this respect makes it necessary to select for breeding purposes only those sires transmitting the largest number of such factors. An expression of this transmitting ability may be found in part in the milk and butterfat productions of the daughters, and it is by means of these productions that breeders in general have measured the breeding value of dairy sires. This method of measuring breeding values, altho used extensively at the present time, is open to several objections. The productions of the daughters used in measuring the breeding value of dairy sires are those that are recorded in the advanced registers of the various purebred dairy cattle associations; daughters with records in these registers have fulfilled certain production requirements and are spoken of as tested daughters. The tested daughters of a sire, in most cases, represent only his best daughters, which are a small percentage of all his daughters. This selection is due in part to the requirements of'the advanced registers, but in the main to the fact that under the present system of advanced registry testing it is exceedingly unprofitable to test daughters other than those showing signs of high producing ability. The productions of only the tested daughters, there fore, do not provide an absolute basis upon which to measure the breeding value of the sires. However, since the tested daughters of all sires have been subjected to the same type of selection, their produc tions provide a uniform basis and may be used as a means of measure ment with the limitation that they will give only relative results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judging Dairy Cattle One of the chief factors influencing the cost of production in dairying is the yield obtained from each cow in the herd. Records kept on a large number of cows show in general that the highest average income over the cost of feed has been obtained from herds composed of the highest producing cows. Book De Laval Dairy Hand Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book De Laval Dairy Hand Book Classic Reprint written by De Laval Separator Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from De Laval Dairy Hand Book The start was made with 20 western heifers bred to freshen the first fall. The heifers calved all right and yielded some milk. But what a surprise they did bring. The weekly profits by actual figures amounted to only 11 cents. Not much outlook for dairy success, especially when all farm and living expenses must be secured from the farm itself. The way things were going caused much anxiety in the Smith home. The family talked matters over and decided they had the wrong kind of cows. Gonse quently, the next spring every cow was sold; such cows were worse than none. Better have one good cow that will give a large yield of milk than to care for a half-dozen to yield no more. A cow and a calf were now purchased. Others were picked up in the neighborhood as opportunity offered. During the next two years this plan was followed with success. Some proved to be very good cows; others were poor. But each cow had to prove her worth from her milk record and if that record was below the standard she was sold to the butcher. The Smiths were now getting their bearings; they saw there was money in the right kind of cows. Their experience in buying showed the value and the merit in good blood. So they aspired to pure-bred stock. Shortly two cows were purchased and the price was $40 each. One gave birth to twin bull calves both of which were sold for $50 apiece. Grade bull calves were worth next to nothing. The Smiths now bought 14 regis tered cows. Each was a high producer and yielded a good profit. Light was appearing at last. As the registered stock increased the grade cows were sold, only the best being retained. At the present time the herd con sists of 100 head, young and old, and all pure-bred and registered.
