Download or read book Opening New Frontiers in Space written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-07-21 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Frontiers Program was created by NASA in 2002 at the recommendation of the NRC's decadal survey for solar system research. In order to optimize solar system research, the NRC recommended a series of principal-investigator missions that encourage innovation and accomplish the main scientific objectives presented in the survey. Two of the five recommended missions have been selected and, as was also recommended in the survey, the NRC was asked in 2007 to provide criteria and guiding principles to NASA for determining the list of candidate missions. This book presents a review of eight missions: the three remaining from the original list of five from the survey plus five missions considered by the survey committee but which were not recommended. Included in the review of each mission is a discussion of relevant science and technology developments since the survey and set of recommended science goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a nuanced narrative about statistical development in Africa since around the time of independence when emerging states needed statistics mainly to support their planning processes. It highlights challenges faced then, some of which have persisted, including institutional, organizational and technical challenges. These challenges manifest themselves in countries with different degrees of severity and are quite severe in post-conflict countries. Key statistical programmes to support statistical development in Africa in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s are presented

Download or read book Taking stock of IFPRI s experience with country programs written by Hazell, Peter B.R. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IFPRI commissioned this study to assess how the country programs (CPs) are performing—which approaches and methods are producing the best outcomes across countries and over time—to identify factors that promote or impede their progress and lessons for making them more impactful in the future. The study has two major components. The first is a survey and analysis of the factors that CP leaders perceived to have most helped them influence host-country policies. We interviewed all current and most past CP leaders, which enabled us to compile evidence from recent CP experiences as well as from the 1980s and 1990s. We focused on the lessons they drew from their past successes that shed light on how to make their other activities successful. We did not undertake similar interviews on failed efforts because it is much harder to elicit such information from CP leaders. Additional insights about unsuccessful activities are, however, captured in the second component of the study, a commissioned external evaluation of the performance of a sample of ongoing country programs. Ideally, the external evaluation would have included CPs in both Africa and Asia, but this was not possible with the available budget. We therefore settled for an evaluation of CPs in Africa south of the Sahara. Doing so had two advantages: (1) the African CPs are more homogenous in terms of their objectives, structure, and internal IFPRI management, making comparisons among them more insightful; and (2) the budget was sufficient to both include all the African CPs in some of the analyses and allow the external evaluator to visit three of them.

Download or read book Report of the Regional Workshop for Europe and Central Asia on the Development of a Global Information System of Farmed Types of Aquatic Genetic Resources Incorporating a Review of Strategic Priorities for a Global Plan of Action written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the proceedings and outcomes of the “Regional Workshop for Europe and Central Asia on the Development of a Global Information System for Farmed Types of Aquatic Genetic Resources (incorporating a review of strategic priorities for a Global Plan of Action)” held from 5 to 8 October 2020. The final wrap-up session was held on 15 October 2020. This workshop, supported financially by the Government of Germany, was the fourth in a series of regional workshops held to generate feedback on the Registry of Farmed Types of Aquatic Genetic Resources (Registry) being developed by FAO in response to the findings of the first report on The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (SoW-AqGR) prepared under the guidance of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Commission) and launched by FAO in 2019. As requested by the Commission, the workshop also sought feedback on an outline of a Global Plan of Action for Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (GPA), as requested by the Commission. The workshop was held online over a period of five days, with sessions lasting between 60 and 120 minutes. The workshop was attended by National Focal Points for Aquatic Genetic Resources from Europe and Central Asia, officials from ministries, governmental organizations, research institutions and by representatives of regional aquaculture organizations. The objectives of the workshop were to promote standardized use of nomenclature and terminology in the description and categorization of aquatic genetic resources (AqGR), especially below the level of species (i.e. farmed types), to identify priority regional stakeholders who would benefit from and could contribute to an information system, such as the Registry, to evaluate the key elements of the prototype Registry using regionally relevant species and their farmed types and to review the strategic priorities and propose concrete activities under each of the four Priority Areas of the GPA.
