Book Energy Efficiency Governance

Download or read book Energy Efficiency Governance written by Dagmar Sibyl Steuwer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy efficiency contributes to the main objectives of energy policy in the European Union: energy security, cost effectiveness and environmental benefits. However, the efficiency potential remains widely untapped. Will White Certificate Instruments, a new framework instrument to foster end-use energy efficiency, help to close the energy efficiency gap? The analysis compares the political process of choosing and designing White Certificate Instruments in Italy, France and Great Britain. The book shows that the type of policy instrument as well as its image has an influence not only on agenda-setting but also on the policy instrument’s effectiveness due to interactions with existing energy efficiency discourses, regulatory traditions and the prevailing policy style.

Book Gas Prices in the UK

Download or read book Gas Prices in the UK written by Philip Wright (MA.) and published by Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. This book was released on 2006 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the reasons for dramatic increases in UK gas prices since 2003, contending that replacement of administered arrangements by market relationships and competition have made UK gas prices far more sensitive to insecurities of supply, both small-scale and large-scale, leading to the formation of an industry ownership structure.

Book Energy in a Competitive Market

Download or read book Energy in a Competitive Market written by Colin Robinson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a wide and fascinating selection of topics incorporating the whole spectrum of energy economics, this book examines the belief that markets are the key to the effective allocation of resources, a notion which arguably applies as much to energy as it does to any other commodity. In particular it focuses on several pertinent issues including: competition and regulation in gas and electricity; comparative efficiency analysis in electricity regulation; UK coal in competitive markets; vertical integration in the oil industry; cluster developments in the UK continental shelf; modelling underlying energy demand trends; and emissions targets, environmental Kuznets curves and incentive mechanisms.

Download or read book UK economic regulators written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: Select Committee on Regulators and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-11-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the privatisation of many nationalised industries in the 1980s, independent sector-specific regulatory offices were established to regulate these industries to promote genuine competition and ensure companies did not exploit monopoly powers. Examples of these regulatory offices include Oftel (telecommunications), Ofgas (gas supply), Offer, (electricity), Ofwat (water services) and Postcomm (postal services). Other regulatory offices with slightly different regulatory remits include the Civil Aviation Authority, the Financial Services Authority, the Pensions Regulator, the Competition Commission and the Office of Fair Trading. The Committee's report examines the statutory remits of the UK economic regulators, their working methods and working relationships, the value for money they provide and the extent to which the regulators have successfully promoted competition and de-regulated where possible, as well as considering whether they should be given an additional statutory duty to facilitate the competitiveness of UK firms. Overall, the Committee concludes that the legislation is working well, but that a greater standardisation of remits should be introduced over time to ensure all regulators are statutorily required to follow best practice. In most sectors, regulators have played an important role in helping to promote competition, with the exception of the water industry. The report explores possible reasons for the lack of competition in this sector, and urges Ofwat to take account of the general comments made by the Competition Appeal Tribunal on its access regime. It highlights the need for greater parliamentary oversight over regulatory bodies and recommends that a Joint Committee of both Houses be set up, or failing this, that a sessional Select Committee be established in the House of Lords.
