Book Jacques Offenbach and the Making of Modern Culture

Download or read book Jacques Offenbach and the Making of Modern Culture written by Laurence Senelick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offenbach's operas were a significant force for cultural change, both in his own time and in the decades to follow. In this book, Laurence Senelick demonstrates the ways in which this musical phenomenon took hold globally, with Offenbach's work offering an alternative, irreverent, sexualized view of life which audiences found liberating, both personally and socially. In the theatre, the composer also inspired cutting-edge innovations in stagecraft and design, and in this book, he is recognized as a major cultural influence, with an extensive impact on the spheres of literature, art, film, and even politics. Senelick argues that Offenbach's importance spread far beyond France, and that his provocative and entertaining works, often seen as being more style than substance, influenced numerous key artists, writers, and thinkers, and made a major contribution to the development of modern society.

On my return from Niagara I gave the promised concert. The immense placards with which the walls were covered announced to all that I was to appear for the last time. I had never before seen my name under this aspect; the letters were as tall as I am and four times as broad. The American public showed a due appreciation of these splendid bills. Gilmore's Garden was filled with the elite of New York society. The moment I appeared I was hailed with cheers, hurrahs, and enthusiastic applause. And they say Americans are a cold-blooded people! I will spare you the particulars of that night, for aside of the fact that I have sworn to speak as little as possible of myself, I must confess that I was so overcome by this unexpected manifestation that I did not very well comprehend what was going on around me. After the concert, I found with difficulty a few words to repeat, once more, my thanks to my musicians for the valuable assistance they had given me during my visit, expressing the wish, of the sincerity of which they could have no doubt, that the success they so well deserved might continue long after my departure. They thanked me for the performance I had given for the benefit of their association, and made me promise to return to America in the course of two or three years. I promised, as people promise at such times; but, should circumstances permit, I assure you that it would be very pleasant to me to return to Yankee-land and to improve my acquaintance with this marvellous country and with this great people, who showed me a degree of sympathy which will ever remain dear to my memory. CHAPTER XXVI. HOMEWARD-BOUND. On the 8th July I sailed on board the Ganadas which, to my great satisfaction, happened to be...

Download or read book The Unheralded Triumph written by Jon C. Teaford and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. In 1888 the British observer James Bryce declared "the government of cities" to be "the one conspicuous failure of the United States." During the following two decades, urban reformers would repeat Bryce's words with ritualistic regularity; nearly a century later, his comment continues to set the tone for most assessments of nineteenth-century city government. Yet by the end of the century, as Jon Teaford argues in this important reappraisal, American cities boasted the most abundant water supplies, brightest street lights, grandest parks, largest public libraries, and most efficient systems of transportation in the world. Far from being a "conspicuous failure," municipal governments of the late nineteenth century had successfully met challenges of an unprecedented magnitude and complexity. The Unheralded Triumph draws together the histories of the most important cities of the Gilded Age—especially New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Baltimore—to chart the expansion of services and the improvement of urban environments between 1870 and 1900. It examines the ways in which cities were transformed, in a period of rapid population growth and increased social unrest, into places suitable for living. Teaford demonstrates how, during the last decades of the nineteenth century, municipal governments adapted to societal change with the aid of generally compliant state legislatures. These were the years that saw the professionalization of city government and the political accommodation of the diverse ethnic, economic, and social elements that compose America's heterogeneous urban society. Teaford acknowledges that the expansion of urban services dangerously strained city budgets and that graft, embezzlement, overcharging, and payroll-padding presented serious problems throughout the period. The dissatisfaction with city governments arose, however, not so much from any failure to achieve concrete results as from the conflicts between those hostile groups accommodated within the newly created system: "For persons of principle and gentlemen who prized honor, it seemed a failure yet American municipal government left as a legacy such achievements as Central Park, the new Croton Aqueduct, and the Brooklyn Bridge, monuments of public enterprise that offered new pleasures and conveniences for millions of urban citizens."

Book excerpt: "[This book is] a comprehensive illustrated history of the U.S. musical from its colonial origins to the present, tracing the connections and influences of the minstrel show, operetta, burlesque, melodrama, revues, circus, dance, musical comedy, the Broadway opera, the book musical and other forms. . . . Further, Mates introduces readers to inside stuff--the various types of musical performers." Variety Mates shows the musical stage in all its guises--from burlesque to musical comedy to grand opera--from its beginnings in pre-Revolutionary America to the present day. He deals sensitively with the recurrent aesthetic question of popular versus highbrow art and also looks at critical reactions to popular theatrical forms of musical entertainment. He introduces the reader to various types of theatrical companies, the changing repertory, and the many kinds of musical performers who have animated the stage. Mates focuses on the creative relationships between the different forms of opera, the minstrel show and circus, melodrama and dance, burlesque, revue, vaudeville, and musical comedy.
