Book Off Nevsky Prospekt

Download or read book Off Nevsky Prospekt written by Elena Markova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off Nevsky Prospekt is the first study to be published in English of the exceptionally rich and diverse theatre studio movement which has flourished in St Petersburg during the 1980s and '90s. Professor Markova charts the development of the theatre studios - from their beginnings as a reaction to the repressive atmosphere of the Soviet period and through the "theatre bacchanalia" of the Perestroika years. She then surveys today's vibrant scene, with analyses of key productions and interviews with many of the central figures, and describes how theatre studios have subverted the conventions of the past to create a new dialogue with the changing society from which their audience is drawn.

Book Stanislavsky in Practice

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vreneli Farber
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9781433103155
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Stanislavsky in Practice written by Vreneli Farber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanislavsky in Practice focuses on the course of study pursued today by aspiring actors in Russia and on the philosophy that informs this curriculum. It draws on extensive observation during the academic year 2000-2001 of the actor training program of the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theatre Arts (SPGATI), one of the three most prestigious theatrical institutes in Russia, and on interviews of a wide array of individuals in the Academy. Although the years since 1991 have witnessed many changes in theater and in actor training - sources of funding, administration, choice of repertoire, new methodologies, etc. - there remains much continuity with the past. The core of this continuity is the Stanislavsky tradition, which nevertheless has been affected by the views of post-Soviet Russia. The developments in actor training from 1991 to 2001 reflect the challenges and problems faced by other institutions in the arts and sciences. In other words, the phenomenon of continuity and discontinuity with the past is characteristic of other institutions in Russia, cultural as well as scientific and educational.

Book The Forgotten

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rev. Christopher Lawrence Zugger
  • Publisher : Syracuse University Press
  • Release : 2001-04-01
  • ISBN : 9780815606796
  • Pages : 600 pages

Download or read book The Forgotten written by Rev. Christopher Lawrence Zugger and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable work traces the history of Soviet Catholicism from its rich life in 1914 through its tentative fate in the first sixty years of the USSR. Rev. Zugger tells of the faithful men and women shackled by dictatorship, doomed to deportation, and abandoned by their own church in the west. Soviet Russia was an empire born of atheism with religion viewed as a threat to the state’s notion of individualism. By 1932, dictator Joseph Stalin firmly declared that religion would be extinct in the USSR within five years. In this compelling volume, Zugger details the Soviet campaign against Catholicism among many ethnic groups and worshippers whose devotion would not be shaken. He shows how they kept faith alive in prison camps, in remote villages, in monastery prisons, and in the secrecy of their homes, where the light of faith continued to burn brightly while churches crumbled or became dance halls and office buildings. This is the first book in English to recount the fate of Catholic Russia and the church in the various lands conquered by Soviet rule. It is at once a memorial to those who perished, a tribute to those who survived, and a testament to the enduring power of faith.

Book Notes from Underground and the Double

Download or read book Notes from Underground and the Double written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'That sense of the meaninglessness of existence that runs through much of twentieth-century writing - from Conrad and Kafka, to Beckett and beyond - starts in Dostoyevsky's work' Malcolm Bradbury Alienated from society and paralysed by a sense of his own insignificance, the anonymous narrator of Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground tells the story of his tortured life. With bitter irony, he describes his refusal to become a worker in the 'anthill' and his gradual withdrawal from society. The seemingly ordinary world of St Petersburg takes on a nightmarish quality in The Double when a government clerk encounters a man who looks exactly like him - his double perhaps, or possibly the darker side of his own personality. Like Notes from Underground, this is a masterly tragi-comic study of human consciousness. Translated by Ronald Wilks with an Introduction by Robert Louis Jackson

Book Storm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Allen Noren
  • Publisher : Travelers' Tales
  • Release : 2010-07-31
  • ISBN : 1609520041
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Storm written by Allen Noren and published by Travelers' Tales. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begun as a grand adventure, Storm tells the story of a trip that quickly became a tumultuous test of endurance. When the Baltic States of the former Soviet Union opened up, Allen and his girlfriend Suzanne were drawn to the prospect of traveling together once again. Setting out on a motorcycle, the two seasoned travelers rode through Germany, Denmark, and Sweden to the Arctic Circle, then on to Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. Though they’d been together for seven years, and thought they knew what to expect from an extended road trip, they couldn’t foresee the unrelenting natural elements, shifts in once-shared dreams, or fissures in their relationship that lay ahead. Often darkly humorous, Storm reveals a couple’s love and the fragility of human connections as it recounts the journey that became a test of both riders’ physical and emotional endurance.

Book Approaching the Cosmos Hotel

Download or read book Approaching the Cosmos Hotel written by Robert Champ and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching the Cosmos Hotel is a compendium of travels, an odyssey through much of the world over many years, a memoir that explores events, cultures, gastronomy, architecture and art through the critical lens of a man who doesn't take himself too seriously. Robert Champ's experiences humorously expose the fools, hypocrites and outr characters he encounters: out-of-their-element expats in Mexico and Spain, tourists in Russia or China who might better have stayed home, rigid officialdom everywhere. Fascinating landscapes and personalities limn these pages, and the armchair adventurer seeking an unconventional narrative will have no trouble finding it here.
