Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy the complete Main Street Merchants series by Linda Seed, with four full-length novels. Moonstone Beach: She’s a divorcee who’s still struggling to recover. He’s notorious for his reckless ways with women. What could possibly go wrong? Kate Bennet owns a small bookstore in the breathtaking Central Coast town of Cambria, California. Two years out from a divorce that left her emotionally fragile, she’s starting to think that maybe she’s ready for love again—or at least for a fling with a hot man. Jackson Graham is a local chef who’s controlling when it comes to food, careless when it comes to love, and temperamental when it comes to just about everything. When Kate’s friends set things up between Kate and Jackson, she expects some casual pleasure followed by a hasty goodbye, but Jackson’s long-term crush on Kate means that he’s in this one to win. The problem is, neither he nor Kate knows whether he can change the self-defeating habits that usually send women scurrying for the door. Cambria Sky: A ruined reputation. A second chance. A conflict between love and ambition. Genevieve Porter was forced to flee the art world of Manhattan after she blew the whistle on the shady practices of a powerful dealer. Now she owns a small gallery in the scenic beach town of Cambria, California. For Gen, this is a place to regroup; she’s poised to restore her name in the art world and return to New York in triumph. When she meets Ryan Delaney, a cattle rancher who’s more than he appears to be, she’s ready for a sexy roll in the hay—literally. But as her feelings for him become more than casual, she realizes that his roots on the Central Coast go back generations, and it’s going to be a challenge to lure him away from his family’s land. If they’re going to make a life together, one of them will have to give up old ideas, old goals—old feelings about what success means, and what makes a place a true home. Nearly Wild: She’s finished with men. He’s made it his mission to change her mind. Rose Watkins has never been afraid of anything. She wasn’t afraid to leave home and cross the country on her own at eighteen, she’s not afraid to stand up for herself against judgmental bullies who criticize her unconventional looks, and she’s not afraid to chase her dreams, no matter how elusive they may seem. But after a phony date with doctoral candidate Will Bachman—concocted to help him save his ego in front of an ex-girlfriend—Rose realizes that the possibility of true love is perhaps the scariest thing she’s ever had to face. Fire and Glass: She’s engaged to a man with a promising future. But even as she makes plans to say “I do,” another man is hoping that she won’t…. It wasn't easy for Lacy Jordan to watch her best friends get paired off one by one, while she was still single and toiling away at a low-paying job. Maybe that's how she ended up engaged to her mother's chiropractor—a man who looks good on paper, but whose stiff manner and controlling ways leave Lacy cold. When steamy-hot glass artist Daniel Reed rescues Lacy from a dicey situation, she finds herself feeling things for him that she's never felt for another man. But Daniel's reluctance to accept her love—and everything that comes with it—means he's the one who needs an adjustment, before both of their hearts are shattered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important part of the New Deal, the Modernization Credit Plan helped transform urban business districts and small-town commercial strips across 1930s America, but it has since been almost completely forgotten. In Modernizing Main Street, Gabrielle Esperdy uncovers the cultural history of the hundreds of thousands of modernized storefronts that resulted from the little-known federal provision that made billions of dollars available to shop owners who wanted to update their facades. Esperdy argues that these updated storefronts served a range of complex purposes, such as stimulating public consumption, extending the New Deal’s influence, reviving a stagnant construction industry, and introducing European modernist design to the everyday landscape. She goes on to show that these diverse roles are inseparable, woven together not only by the crisis of the Depression, but also by the pressures of bourgeoning consumerism. As the decade’s two major cultural forces, Esperdy concludes, consumerism and the Depression transformed the storefront from a seemingly insignificant element of the built environment into a potent site for the physical and rhetorical staging of recovery and progress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has more public libraries than it has McDonald’s restaurants. By any measure, the American public library is a heavily used and ubiquitous institution. Popular thinking identifies the public library as a neutral agency that protects democratic ideals by guarding against censorship as it makes information available to people from all walks of life. Among librarians this idea is known as the “library faith.” But is the American public library as democratic as it appears to be? In Main Street Public Library, eminent library historian Wayne Wiegand studies four emblematic small-town libraries in the Midwest from the late nineteenth century through the federal Library Service Act of 1956, and shows that these institutions served a much different purpose than is so often perceived. Rather than acting as neutral institutions that are vital to democracy, the libraries of Sauk Centre, Minnesota; Osage, Iowa; Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and Lexington, Michigan, were actually mediating community literary values and providing a public space for the construction of social harmony. These libraries, and the librarians who ran them, were often just as susceptible to the political and social pressures of their time as any other public institution. By analyzing the collections of all four libraries and revealing what was being read and why certain acquisitions were passed over, Wiegand challenges both traditional perceptions and professional rhetoric about the role of libraries in our small-town communities. While the American public library has become essential to its local community, it is for reasons significantly different than those articulated by the “library faith.”
