Book Of Land Bones and Money

Download or read book Of Land Bones and Money written by Emily McGiffin and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African literature of iimbongi, the oral poets of the amaXhosa people, has long shaped understandings of landscape and history and offered a forum for grappling with change. Of Land, Bones, and Money examines the shifting role of these poets in South African society and the ways in which they have helped inform responses to segregation, apartheid, the injustices of extractive capitalism, and contemporary politics in South Africa. Emily McGiffin first discusses the history of the amaXhosa people and the environment of their homelands before moving on to the arrival of the British, who began a relentless campaign annexing land and resources in the region. Drawing on scholarship in the fields of human geography, political ecology, and postcolonial ecocriticism, she considers isiXhosa poetry in translation within its cultural, historical, and environmental contexts, investigating how these poems struggle with the arrival and expansion of the exploitation of natural resources in South Africa and the entrenchment of profoundly racist politics that the process entailed. In contemporary South Africa, iimbongi remain a respected source of knowledge and cultural identity. Their ongoing practice of producing complex, spiritually rich literature continues to have a profound social effect, contributing directly to the healing and well-being of their audiences, to political transformation, and to environmental justice.

His lies have bullied women o_ their place of assignment and left them disoriented about who they are. Because of insecurities, women have settled for less, trying to prove their value and validate their identity. This identity crisis has caused tragic breakdowns economically, socially, culturally, morally, ecclesiastically and spiritually leaving a human race, a victim of this fate because a woman is a key player in this game of life. This book is a great mirror for every woman who wants to see the real image of who she was created to be and how vital her existence is to divinity and humanity. It redefines who she is, her value, her purpose, what she represents, the divine mysteries hidden in her and how she affects the totality of human life. Today, it is imperative that every woman rediscovers God’s original blueprint for her life in order to maximize her potential and preserve life in her domain. Everything about, within, without and around a woman is connected. Therefore, she cannot be defined by one title. She is plural. She is on a mission as an undercover agent hired by God, licensed by Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

What do a spacesuit and a chicken egg have in common? Highlighting the fascinating twists and turns of evolution across more than 540 million years, paleobiologist Matthew Bonnan uses everyday objects to explain the emergence and adaptation of the vertebrate skeleton. What can camera lenses tell us about the eyes of marine reptiles? How does understanding what prevents a coffee mug from spilling help us understand the posture of dinosaurs? The answers to these and other intriguing questions illustrate how scientists have pieced together the history of vertebrates from their bare bones. Book excerpt: From the Chatham Islands/ Rekohu to London, from 1835 to the 21st century, this quietly powerful and compelling novel confronts the complexity of being Moriori, Maori and Pakeha. In the 1880s, Mere yearns for independence. Iraia wants the same but, as the descendant of a slave, such things are hardly conceivable. One summer, they notice their friendship has changed, but if they are ever to experience freedom they will need to leave their home in the Queen Charlotte Sounds. A hundred years later, Lula and Bigs are born. The birth is literally one in a million, as their mother, Tui, likes to say. When Tui dies, they learn there is much she kept secret and they, too, will need to travel beyond their world, to an island they barely knew existed. Neither Mere and Iraia nor Lula and Bigs are aware that someone else is part of their journeys. He does not watch over them so much as through them, feeling their loss and confusion as if it were his own.
