Book The Security of Sea Lanes of Communication in the Indian Ocean Region

Download or read book The Security of Sea Lanes of Communication in the Indian Ocean Region written by Dennis Rumley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2007, this book focuses on the security of sea lanes of communication. It was a joint publication between the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) and the Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) and is an important book for three particular reasons. First, it takes a step forward in identifying key policy themes that can be applied to interstate cooperation around the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Second, the particular theme discussed is not only central to the economic well-being of Indian Ocean countries, but also to many of the world’s most important trading states, and finally the various discussions within the book raise a host of issues to which regional as well as non-regional policy-makers should give serious consideration.

Book Imperial Lineages and Legacies in the Eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book Imperial Lineages and Legacies in the Eastern Mediterranean written by Rhoads Murphey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comparative study of empires has traditionally been addressed in the widest possible global historical perspective with comparison of New World empires such as the Aztecs and Incas side by side with the history of imperial Rome and the empires of China and Russia in the medieval and modern periods. Surprisingly little work has been carried out focusing on the evolution of state control and imperial administration in the same territory; approached in a rigorous and historically grounded fashion over a wide extent of historical time from late antiquity to the twentieth century. The empires of Rome, Byzantium, the Ottomans and the latter-day imperialists in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, all inherited or seized and sought to develop overlapping parts of a common territorial base in the Eastern Mediterranean and all struggled to contain, control or otherwise alter the political, cultural and spiritual allegiances of the same indigenous population groups that were brought under their rule and administration. The task undertaken in Imperial Lineages and Legacies in the Eastern Mediterranean is to investigate the balance between continuity and change adopted at various historical conjunctures when new imperial regimes were established and to expose common features and shared approaches to the challenge of imperial rule that united otherwise divergent societies and imperial administrations. The work incorporates the contributions by twelve scholars, each leading practitioners in their respective fields and each contributing their particular insights on the shared theme of imperial identity and legacy in the Mediterranean World of the pagan, Christian and Muslim eras.

Book The Northern Sea Route Its Development and Evolving State of Operations in the 1990s

Download or read book The Northern Sea Route Its Development and Evolving State of Operations in the 1990s written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The summer of 1991 marked the first time in recent history that Russia offered to escort ships of other countries across the Northern Sea Route (NSR). For moving cargo between the North Pacific region and Northern European ports, the NSR, along Russia's northern coastline, is between 35 and 60% shorter than the traditionally used routes through the Suez and Panama Canals. In addition to its shorter distance, there already exists an extensive ports and shipping infrastructure, a current cargo base, and the potential for developing new markets in Russia and other northern areas. These incentives are attracting considerable attention from the international shipping community, including that portion servicing Alaskan and northwestern U.S. ports. This report is a general compilation of the historical usage, recent trade developments, the current regulatory climate, the physical environment, the ports and navigational infrastructure, cost factors, and practical considerations that may shape future U.S. interests in the route.

The encyclopedia marks the emergence of the aquarium, cruise, energy, fishing, insurance, mining, trade, transportation, recreation, and sport industries, and includes entries on harbors, ports, and coastal development that play a part in the economics of commercial water use.
