Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ]+++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: Paul in 2 Corinthians delivers a new concept to his audience, one in which is described by him as " being caught up into paradise." Most scholars who hold to a predominantly evangelical and premillennial view contest that Paul is describing not a second heaven, but; moreover, a second tribulation before the final rapture. Some modern-day scholars have referred to Paul's concept as people being delivered over to Satan which follows Paul's Jewish-Christian theology in Romans 3:21 to 4:25 where Paul defends his case of justification by faith through Christ' faith. Also, in Hebrews chapters 9 through 10, Paul preaches a similar message but of the converse towards his argument in Romans 3:21 to 4:25. This time, our sanctification in Christianity achieved through perfecting ourselves in Christ. Following a literal translation of 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, Paul is likening his discourse of the thorn stuck in his flesh to the characteristics and attributes of the story of Job. Job was a man who God let Satan tempt into sin, so that Job would be directly delivered by Christ' righteousness and by having faith in Him, Job is declared righteous in the fulfilling of God's will. Albeit, Paul talks about how anguished the thorn in his flesh in this vision of his has changed him as a man. While most outside the faith will call us hypocrites and people who judge others, we must base our exhorting of others on their countenance before God. The position of one before God is determined and judged by God through these two theological truths coming together. First, justification is achieved by complying in portion with Jesus Christ faith to His Father's tasks at hand. We need to show the same reverence for God. Secondly, for all of us to achieve sanctification through the jurisdiction of continually imposed faith that fills all these requirements through sanctification. I too have seen the whereabouts of this third heaven, but instead, I want to show us the trials, tribulations, and final liberation of one's escape after the process of God giving some over to Satan. I must remind you that this first book in the Dragon Niche's series Prudence to Wisdom only covers the moral and ethical philosophy behind the divine activity and theological discourse. However, specific ordinances and edicts from God have been purposely left out until the sequel comes out. May you enjoy finding your new liberation in Christ. God bless! Psalm 1421 I cry out to the Lord with my voice; with my voice to the Lord I make my supplication.2 I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble.3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then you knew my path. In the way in which I walk, they have secretly set a snare for me.4 Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; refuge has failed me; no one cares for my soul.5 I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, " You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.6 Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than I.7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise Your name; the righteous shall surround me, for You shall deal bountifully with me" ( Psa. 142, NKJV).The Third Heaven( 2 Cor. 12:1-6)1 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago- whether in the body I do not know, God knows- such a one was caught up to the third heaven.3 And I know such a man-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows-4 how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.5 Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. 6 For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me.

Book excerpt: At a time when religion and spirituality have been divorced from one another and morality and ethics are viewed as being confining rather than liberating, Fr. James Keenan has developed a new edition to his beloved book Moral Wisdom. There are new discussions of social sin and Pope Benedict XVI's encyclical Caritas in Veritate, a clearer exploration of Jesus in the New Testament, and new study questions at the end of each chapter. 'Moral wisdom, ' as Fr. Keenan calls it, is the distinctive gift of the Catholic tradition, a gift that helps us discern what values to pursue and which virtues to embody on the path to becoming who we really are and who God calls us to be. Fr. Keenan uses a conversational style filled with stories and examples to open the treasure trove of resources in the Catholic tradition for developing moral wisdom. He lifts up the lessons on love, conscience, sin, and suffering, helping readers connect with the formative influences of the Catholic heritage and appreciate what gives meaning to our lives and what enhances our relationships with friends and family

Book Decision Making and the Will of God

Download or read book Decision Making and the Will of God written by Garry Friesen and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2009-10-07 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God Have a Perfect Will for Your Life? Does God have a perfect will for each Christian? Can you be absolutely certain of God’s specific will for your life? In this expanded twenty-fifth anniversary edition of his highly acclaimed work, Garry Friesen examines the prevalent view on God’s will today and provides a sound biblical alternative to the traditional teaching of how God guides us. This new edition includes these helpful resources: • Study guide for small groups • Responses to Frequently Asked Questions • Guide to painless Scripture memorization Friesen tackles the very practical issues of choosing a mate, picking a career, and giving in this fresh and liberating approach to decision making and the will of God. Story Behind the Book Most Christians have been taught how to find God’s will, yet many are still unsure whether they’ve found it. God does guide His people, but the question is, “How does He guide?” After “putting out a fleece” to decide which college to attend, Garry Friesen began pondering why it was so hard to find God’s will when he had so sincerely sought it. Was he the only one who did not have 100 percent clarity for every decision? Then a new possibility struck—perhaps his understanding of the nature of God’s will was biblically deficient. Maybe there was a better way to understand HOW God guides.

Book excerpt: "A devastating attack upon the dominance of atheism in science today." Giovanni Fazio, Senior Physicist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics The debate over the ultimate source of truth in our world often pits science against faith. In fact, some high-profile scientists today would have us abandon God entirely as a source of truth about the universe. In this book, two professional astronomers push back against this notion, arguing that the science of today is not in a position to pronounce on the existence of God—rather, our notion of truth must include both the physical and spiritual domains. Incorporating excerpts from a letter written in 1615 by famed astronomer Galileo Galilei, the authors explore the relationship between science and faith, critiquing atheistic and secular understandings of science while reminding believers that science is an important source of truth about the physical world that God created.

Book THE PRACTICAL RULE OF CHRISTIAN PIETY

Download or read book THE PRACTICAL RULE OF CHRISTIAN PIETY written by ZUNINO GARRIDO, CINTA and published by Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Huelva. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1575 Christopher Plantin sent to press Arias Montano's Dictatum Christianum sive communes et aptae disciplinorum Christi omnium partes. It is presumed that shortly after the publication of the Latin original the treatise was translated into French, Dutch, and Italian, yet, though there is written evidence of the French impression, no copy of this translation nor of the Italian or Dutch are extant. During years the only known surviving translation of the Dictatum was the one rendered into Spanish by Montano?s disciple Pedro de Valencia thirty years after the publication of the original. These circumstances certainly underline the exceptionality of the 1685 English translation of the Dictatum Christianum, which has remained unknown to scholars until very recently, and to which its translator, Archibald Lovell, gave the title of The Practical Rule of Christian Piety: Containing the Summ of the Whole Duty of a True Disciple of Christ. Printed in London in 1685 by Joseph Hindmarsh, this unique translation of The Practical Rule will surely prove particularly interesting to scholars who study Spanish and English Humanism and early modern spirituality, philosophy, and culture. With this new edition of the text, our aim is to make it known to modern researchers, and to explore the peculiarities of the translation and of the ideological backdrop against which Lovell Englished Montano's Dictatum Christianum almost a century after the death of the Spanish Hebraist, and in a country where Anglicanism had become the established official creed in stern opposition to Catholicism.

Book The Wisdom of Religious Commitment

Download or read book The Wisdom of Religious Commitment written by Terrence W. Tilley and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring a practical, rather than propositional, understanding of religious belief, this book provides a new construct through which to view philosophy of religion. Terrence W. Tilley shifts the focus of debate from the justification of rational belief to the exercise of wisdom in making or maintaining a commitment to religious practices. It is through practices, Tilley concludes, that religious belief is formed. After analyzing the strengths and limitations of the modern approaches, Tilley applies the concept of wisdom to the process of making a religious commitment. Wisdom, as explored by Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, and John Henry Newman, may be thought of as the bridge between intellectual and moral virtues. Roughly, it can be described as the ability to put intellect into action in a context. Because wisdom is a virtue requiring concrete display, the book discusses the wisdom of commitment to specific religious practices of a range of traditions. These examples demonstrate the issues and complexities involved in the wisdom of making a religious commitment. This important challenge to contemporary philosophy of religion will be of special interest to students and teachers of theology and philosophy of religion.
