L'histoire vraie ou fausse bien ou mal écrite est donc l'aliment naturel de cette multitude, tmp nulle pour entreprendre de méditer, tr0p vaine pour se réduire à végéter, mais qui par bonheur pour elle n'est pas ennemie de la lecture. C'est à elle seule que l'histoire plait toujours, sous quelque forme qu 'on la lui présente; les lecteurs qui pensent ne sont nisi a\ides ni si indulgens. D'une ame froide des vertus molles et peu actives qui pour s'exercer avaient besoin d'etre averties mais qui n'avaient be soin que de l'etre. Madame Geoffrin allait chez son ami et lui peignait avec interet et sentiment l'etat des malheureux qu'ell voulait soulager. Ils sont bien a plaindre disait le philosophe et il ajoutait quelques mots sur le malheur de la condition hu maine; et puis il parlait d'autre chose. Madame Geoffrin le lais sait aller; et quand elle le quittait: donnez - moi, lui disait elle, cinquante louis pour ces pauvres gens. Vous avez raison disait Fontenelle; et il allait chercher les cinquante louis, les lui donnait et ne lui en reparlait jamais tout pret a recom mencer le lendemain, pourvu qu' on l'en avertit encore. On trouvera peut - etre un peu seche la bienfaisance du philosophe mais du moins on ne lui reprochera pas l'ostentation. Que le ciel donne a tous les hommes la bienfaisance, meme avec au tant de secheresse mais surtout avec autant de simplicite; et que le genre humain benisse la vertu active qui sait comme la digue amie de Fontenelle mettre ce sentiment en action dans les coeurs ou il repose et attend qu'on le reveille. Cet abandon, qui peut-etre n'etait meme qu'apparent, ne dura que tres-peu de jours; le pere de d'Alembert le repara aussitot qu'il eu fut instruit; il fit pour l'education de son fils, et pour lui assurer une subsistance independante, ce qu'exigeaient la nature et le devoir: sa famille regarda d'Alembert, tant qu'il fut inconnu, comme un parent a qui elle devait des soins et des egards; et lorsqu'il fut devenu celebre, elle s'honora de ces liens que la reconnaissance avait resserres: D'Alembert fit ses etudes au college des Quatre-Nations, et les fil d'une maniere brillante, indice quelquefois trompeur de ce qu'un homme doit etre un jour.
