Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Learning from Lying

Download or read book Learning from Lying written by Julia Luisa Abramson and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Learning from Lying narrates a new literary history as seen through the lens of mystification. Beginning with an examination of mystification's elaboration during the century of Enlightenment, the book accounts for mystification's distinctiveness relative to other deceptive forms, particularly forgery, and provides a timely intervention in current debates about the study of fakes. Readings of works by Denis Diderot, Prosper Merimee, and Wolfgang Hildesheimer follow out the cosmopolitan roots of the genre in the Republic of Letters and show how it theorizes literature through practical experiment. For when textual imitation is revealed, it unveils the necessary collusion between reader and writer that allows literature to exist as such."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Diderot and Lessing as Exemplars of a Post Spinozist Mentality

Download or read book Diderot and Lessing as Exemplars of a Post Spinozist Mentality written by Louise Crowther and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned as the chief challenger of traditional views of morality, man's freedom, and religion from 1650-1750, Benedict de Spinoza (1632-77) spread alarm and confusion throughout Europe through his writings. Theologians and rulers desperately sought to ban the spread of Spinozist ideas, and, in the post-Spinozist climate, eighteenth- century thinkers, often exasperated and perplexed, attempted to cope with the fallout from this intellectual explosion. The philosophical radicalism of Denis Diderot (1713-84), a French philosophe, and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-81), a German philosopher, well exemplifies the post-Spinozist mentality that permeated eighteenth-century thinking. As they grapple with the loss of intellectual, moral, and theological certainties, Diderot and Lessing re-work post-Spinozist ideas and in many instances elucidate even more radical ideas than Spinoza himself had envisaged.

Book Human Nature Cultural Diversity and the French Enlightenment

Download or read book Human Nature Cultural Diversity and the French Enlightenment written by Henry Vyverberg and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Henry Vyverberg traces the evolution and consequences of a crucial idea in French Enlightenment thought--the idea of human nature. Human nature was commonly seen as a broadly universal, unchanging entity, though perhaps modifiable by geographical, social, and historical factors. Enlightenment empiricism suggested a degree of cultural diversity that has often been underestimated in studies of the age. Evidence here is drawn from Diderot's celebrated Encyclopedia and from a vast range of writing by such Enlightenment notables as Voltaire, Rousseau, and d'Holbach. Vyverberg explains not only the age's undoubted fascination with uniformity in human nature, but also its acknowledgment of significant limitations on that uniformity. He shows that although the Enlightenment's historical sense was often blinkered by its notions of a uniform human nature, there were also cracks in this concept that developed during the Enlightenment itself.
