Book Odour Source Localization Using Multiple Plume tracing Mobile Robots

Download or read book Odour Source Localization Using Multiple Plume tracing Mobile Robots written by Zhenzhang Liu and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent increasing threat of chemical weapons technologies has highlighted the need for superior detection of hazardous emission sources. One promising area of technological development is odour source detection using plume-tracing mobile robots, which have the potential to detect emissions released by sources such as fire, toxic gas and explosives, without endangering human life during the detection process. Aims of this proposed research project are to investigate the use of multiple mobile robots to locate a dangerous odour source in realistic environments. The realistic environments presented in this study are two city-like environments and a complicated indoor building environment. These two kinds of environments are considered to have a very close relationship with human life. The research methods for this project include two aspects which are simulation and experimental validation. A simulation framework for this study was constructed using combined CFD and MATLAB techniques. The control strategies for plume-tracing mobile robots were developed and tested in the simulation framework. A prototype plume-tracing mobile robot was physically developed for the purpose of real world experimental validation. A series of experiments proved that the control strategies developed in the simulation framework was applicable to a real plume-tracing robot; on the other hand, the experiments also proved that the developed simulation framework was capable of reflecting real world plume-tracing scenarios. The contributions to the plume-tracing research field achieved in this research project are: (a) a novel simulation framework using combined CFD and MATLAB techniques for plume tracing research was developed and it is believed that the framework is helpful for the researchers in plume-tracing research field; (b) a small size plume-tracing mobile robot was fabricated. This small robot has the capability of tracing odour plumes in complicated wind-varying environments. The capability of this kind of robot is considered to be a new input into this research field. (c) a supervisory approach was proposed in this study and the developed supervisory programs coordinated multiple robots to locate an odour source in realistic environments effectively.

Book Active Sensors for Local Planning in Mobile Robotics

Download or read book Active Sensors for Local Planning in Mobile Robotics written by Penelope Probert Smith and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes recent work on active sensors for mobile robots. An active sensor interacts with its surroundings to supply data on demand for a particular function, gathering and abstracting information according to need rather than acting as a generic data gatherer. Details of the physical operation are hidden. The book deals mainly with active range sensors, which provide rapid information for local planning, describing extraction of two-dimensional features such as lines, corners and cylinders to reconstruct a plan of a building. It is structured according to the physical principles of the sensors, since to a large extent these determine the function of the sensors and the methods of processing. Recent work using sonar, optoelectronic sensors and radar is described. Sections on vision and on sensor management develop the idea of software adaptation for efficient operation in a changing environment. Contents: The Mapping and Localisation Problem; Perception at Millimetre Wavelengths; Advanced Sonar: Principles of Operation and Interpretation; Smooth and Rough Target Modelling: Examples in Mapping and Texture Classification; Sonar Systems: A Biological Perspective; Map Building from Range Data Using Mathematical Morphology; Millimetre Wave Radar for Robotics; Optoelectronic Range Sensors; AMCW LIDAR Range Acquisition; Extracting Lines and Curves from Optoelectronic Range Data; Active Vision for Mobile Robot Navigation; Strategies for Active Sensor Management. Readership: Graduate students and final year undergraduate students in electrical and electronic engineering, systems and knowledge, robotics, image processing and artificial intelligence.

The 48 papers presented there were selected through rigorous peer review with a 50% acceptance ratio. Along with three invited talks, they addressed the spreading research fields of DARS, which are classifiable along two streams: theoretical and standard studies of DARS, and interdisciplinary studies using DARS concepts. The former stream includes multi-robot cooperation (task assignment methodology among multiple robots, multi-robot localization, etc.), swarm intelligence, and modular robots. The latter includes distributed sensing, mobiligence, ambient intelligence, and mul- agent systems interaction with human beings. This book not only offers readers the latest research results related to DARS from theoretical studies to application-oriented ones; it also describes the present trends of this field. Book Development of a Swarming Algorithm for Mobile Robots

Download or read book Development of a Swarming Algorithm for Mobile Robots written by Humairah Mansor and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swarming robots basically consist of a group of several simple robots that interactand collaborate with each other to achieve shared goals. It is inspired by social insects, which can perform tasks that are beyond the capability of an individual. In a navigation task, a single robot system is not suitable to be used as an agent for the navigation usually covers a wide range of area. Furthermore, a single robot system is more complicated and requires a higher cost to build since the mobile robots need to be more complex in order to enable their abilities. Therefore, a group of simple robots is introduced. A group of robots can perform their tasks together in a more efficient way compared to a single robot, hence developa more robust system. This thesis presents an approach for swarming algorithm using autonomous mobile robots. This project implements the swarming algorithm by supplementing the ability of mobile robot platforms with autonomy and odour detection. The work focused on the localization of chemical odour source in the testing environment and the leader and follower swarm formation through wireless communication. The project was developed in stages, namely hardware implementation where the mobile robots were given the ability to detect obstacles. A TGS 2600 Figaro sensor was utilized to provide the ability to detect odour. To enable the mobile robots to communicate with each other and able to perform leader and follower designation once the target has been found, the robots were installed with X-Bee module. The robot which found the odour source first will be the leader and the other will automatically become a follower. The Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of X-Bee is used as the parameter to estimate the distance between the leader and the follower robots. The algorithm was developed using Arduino development environment.
