Book excerpt: ABOUT BOOK The American theoretical physicist, Richard Feynman once asked a very simple question. Imagine you live on a planet where you take consistent breaks to recharge, to rejuvenate, and then you come to our planet and during a specific time of the day, the people fall unconscious and when the Sun comes up, everyone regains consciousness, you will have to wonder, what is happening? There is a certain stage within the human developmental life cycle that we tend to do this a lot. There is something about sleeping that makes it so pleasurable, that makes it so enjoyable and there is only one other thing we humans find so sweet especially when we become adults and that thing is to PLAY. What then does it mean to PLAY or to PLAY A GAME? That's what this three-part book series: WHO AM I, tries to examine. Book Kiss and Make Up

Download or read book Kiss and Make Up written by Gene Simmons and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2001-12-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You wanted the truth, you got the truth—the hottest book in the world! Fueled by an explosive mix of makeup, costumes, and attitude, KISS burst onto the music scene thirty years ago and has become a rock institution. The band has sold more than eighty million records, has broken every concert attendance record set by Elvis Presley and the Beatles, stands behind the Beatles alone in number of gold records from any group in history, and has spawned more than 2,500 licenses. There would have been no KISS without Gene Simmons, the outrageous star whose superlong tongue, legendary sexual exploits, and demonic makeup have made him a rock icon. KISS and Make-Up is the wild, shocking, unbelievable story, from the man himself, about how an immigrant boy from Israel studied to be a rabbi, was saved by rock and roll, and became one of the most notorious rock stars the world has ever seen. Before Gene Simmons there was Chaim Witz, a boy from Haifa, Israel, who had no inkling of the life that lay ahead of him. In vivid detail Gene recounts his childhood growing up in Haifa under the watchful eye of his beloved, strong-willed mother, a concentration camp survivor; his adolescent years attending a Jewish theological center for rabbinical studies in Brooklyn; his love of all things American, including comic books, superheroes, and cowboys; and his early fascination with girls and sex, which prompted him to start a rock band in school after he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. KISS and Make-Up is not just the classic story of achieving the American dream through the eyes of an immigrant boy making good, but a juicy, rollicking rock and roll read that takes you along for the ride of your life with KISS, from the 1970s, when they were the biggest band in the world, through the ’80s, when they took off their world-famous war paint, and into the ’90s, when they came back bigger and badder than ever to become the number one touring band in the world. In his own irreverent, unapologetic voice, Gene talks about the girls (4,600 of them and counting); his tight bond with KISS cofounder Paul Stanley; the struggles he and Paul had with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss and their departures from the group; the new band members and Eric Carr’s untimely death; the enormous love and affection he has for the people who put him there in the first place—the KISS Army and the ever-loyal KISS fans around the world; his love life, including stories about his relationships with Cher and Diana Ross and with Shannon Tweed, Playmate of the Year, mother of his son and daughter, and his companion of eighteen years; and much more. Full of dozens of photographs, many never-before-seen pictures from Gene’s private collection, KISS and Make-Up is a surprising, intimate look at the man behind the mask. For the first time Gene reveals all the facets of his complex personality—son, rock star, actor, record producer, businessman, ladies’ man, devoted father, and now author.

Book Process Management and Organizational Process Maturity

Download or read book Process Management and Organizational Process Maturity written by Anna Kosieradzka and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the need for a better understanding of the design, implementation and improvement of process management. It presents and organizes concepts and problems in the field of process management, and indicates supporting tools assigned to each of the four basic stages of the process life cycle (modeling, implementation, verification and perfection). By comparing non-economic and economic organisations, the authors demonstrate that a uniform approach to process management (one that does not take into account the specifics of an organizations goals) is ineffective; instead, process management needs to account for the individuality of an organisation. This book will appeal to researchers studying process and organizational excellence.

Book Universities in the Knowledge Economy

Download or read book Universities in the Knowledge Economy written by Paul Temple and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities are fundamental to the contemporary knowledge economy. They directly and indirectly support economic growth in both developing and advanced economies. In addition to their traditional teaching and research functions, they often also have important roles in supporting regional development and urban regeneration, as well as involvement in fostering international relations, in , cultural developments and in enhancing social cohesion. While higher education institutions in many countries are often assigned key roles in economic and social policy prescriptions, exactly what those roles are and how they should be carried out are often unclear. Universities and the Knowledge Economy provides a much-needed theoretical and empirical analysis of these functions, taking a critical look at the complex connections between knowledge creation, the knowledge economy, and higher education today. This volume: Brings together work on these topics by international experts, reporting and analysing recent policy developments and research Shows the significance of the university’s role in the knowledge economy, and the precise roles that it can play. Presents a range of studies showing how universities interact with other knowledge producers and users, and how these interactions can be managed to achieve the most effective applications of knowledge Universities are multi-faceted institutions that everywhere are accorded special status. Universities and the Knowledge Economy examines how these institutions carry our knowledge production and application, and how their distinctive characters affect what they do. . This title is of both intellectual and operational relevance, and would be suitable for those interested in higher education and policy and practice, and in the theory of higher education. Paul Temple is Reader in Higher Education Management and Co-Director of the Centre for Higher Education Studies at the Institute of Education, University of London, UK.

Book The American Diary of a Japanese Girl

Download or read book The American Diary of a Japanese Girl written by Yone Noguchi and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first American novel by a writer of Japanese ancestry, The American Diary of a Japanese Girl is a landmark of modern American fiction and Japanese American transnationalism. First published in 1902, Yone Noguchi's novel describes the turn-of-the-century adventures of Tokyo belle Miss Morning Glory in a first-person narrative that The New York Times called "perfectly ingenuous and unconventional." Initially published as an authentic journal, the Diary was later revealed to be a playful autobiographical fiction written by a man. No less than her creator, Miss Morning Glory delights in disguises, unabashedly switching gender, class, and ethnic roles. Targeting the American fantasy of Madame Butterfly, Noguchi's New Woman heroine prays for "something more decent than a marriage offer," and freely dispenses her insights on Japanese culture and American lifestyles. With the addition of perceptive critical commentary and comprehensive notes, this first annotated edition sheds new light on the creative inventiveness of an important modernist writer.

Book Beauty and Misogyny

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sheila Jeffreys
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2005-05-31
  • ISBN : 1134264437
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Beauty and Misogyny written by Sheila Jeffreys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-31 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should western beauty practices, ranging from lipstick to labiaplasty, be included within the United Nations understandings of harmful traditional/cultural practices? By examining the role of common beauty practices in damaging the health of women, creating sexual difference, and enforcing female deference, this book argues that they should. In the 1970s feminists criticized pervasive beauty regimes such as dieting and depilation, but some ‘new’ feminists argue that beauty practices are no longer oppressive now that women can ‘choose’ them. However, in the last two decades the brutality of western beauty practices seems to have become much more severe, requiring the breaking of skin, spilling of blood and rearrangement or amputation of body parts. Beauty and Misogyny seeks to make sense of why beauty practices are not only just as persistent, but in many ways more extreme. It examines the pervasive use of makeup, the misogyny of fashion and high-heeled shoes, and looks at the role of pornography in the creation of increasingly popular beauty practices such as breast implants, genital waxing and surgical alteration of the labia. It looks at the cosmetic surgery and body piercing/cutting industries as being forms of self-mutilation by proxy, in which the surgeons and piercers serve as proxies to harm women’s bodies, and concludes by considering how a culture of resistance to these practices can be created. This essential work will appeal to students and teachers of feminist psychology, gender studies, cultural studies, and feminist sociology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to anyone with an interest in feminism, women and beauty, and women’s health.
