This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oceanography of the Labrador Sea in the Vicinity of Hudson Strait in 1965 Another expedition is planned during July and August of 1966 to the Hudson Strait area. Survey work will be performed both inside and outside the entrance of the strait in an effort to tie the circulation of both areas together. In addition, parachute drogues will be used, during several tidal cycles, in order to obtain direct measure ments of the net flow through the strait. Multiple section occupations over several tidal cycles will also be attempted in order to verify the constancy of the distribution of mass regardless of the tidal current fluctuation. Book excerpt: From the data collected on the Labrador Current Expedition, July-August 1965, there is indicated substantiation of the current system defined by Smith (1937), 'Marion Expedition.' The data further shows that Hudson Strait exercises a control on the Laborador Current to the extent that a characteristic water type is formed and pulsed eastward by tidal variations through the strait entrance, forming the cold core and main flow of the Labrador Current. Contributions from the Baffin Land Current, flowing westward into Hudson Strait along the northern shore, appear to form one of the mixing constituents; with Hudson Bay acting as a modifier tending to warm and dilute the waters prior to their outflow along the southern shore of Hudson Strait. Download or read book Oceanography of the Grand Banks Region and the Labrador Sea written by Martin J. Moynihan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oceanography of the Grand Banks Region and the Labrador Sea: April June, August, and October, 1969 The average surface circulation south and east of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland dur ing April and May can be inferred from charts of the mean monthly dynamic topography of the sea surface relative to the -decibarsurface prepared by Soule, 1964 (figs. 1 and These charts are based on 22 years of data with equal weight being given to each year represented. Broken-line contours have been used in areas where the data base is 6 years or less. The charts show the Labrador Current flowing south between the 100 fathom and fathom contours on the eastern slope of the Grand Banks. To the east of the Labrador Current is a dynamic trough consisting of water of low specific volume resulting from the mixing of Labrador Current water and North Atlantic Current water. The Labrador Current flows south on the western side of the dynamic trough and the North Atlantic Current flows north on the eastern side of the trough. A pair of meanders present at about 41°n, 50°w and 43°n, 46°w are part of the North Atlantic Current. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Natural Climate Variability on Decade to Century Time Scales

Download or read book Natural Climate Variability on Decade to Century Time Scales written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reflects the current state of scientific knowledge about natural climate variability on decade-to-century time scales. It covers a wide range of relevant subjects, including the characteristics of the atmosphere and ocean environments as well as the methods used to describe and analyze them, such as proxy data and numerical models. They clearly demonstrate the range, persistence, and magnitude of climate variability as represented by many different indicators. Not only do natural climate variations have important socioeconomic effects, but they must be better understood before possible anthropogenic effects (from greenhouse gas emissions, for instance) can be evaluated. A topical essay introduces each of the disciplines represented, providing the nonscientist with a perspective on the field and linking the papers to the larger issues in climate research. In its conclusions section, the book evaluates progress in the different areas and makes recommendations for the direction and conduct of future climate research. This book, while consisting of technical papers, is also accessible to the interested layperson.

Book A Reconstruction of Summer Sea Ice Conditions in the Labrador Sea Using Hudson s Bay Company Ships Log books 1751 to 1870

Download or read book A Reconstruction of Summer Sea Ice Conditions in the Labrador Sea Using Hudson s Bay Company Ships Log books 1751 to 1870 written by John Vincent Teillet and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sailing ships' log-books contained in the Hudson's Bay Company Archives were used to reconstruct summer sea ice conditions in the Labrador Sea from 1951 to 1870. This reconstruction involved the development of an ice severity index, derived from a content analysis of the word roots and phrases in the ice descriptions, and the comparison of historic encounters with the presence of ice in the same sector in 1965. The icy severity index obtained for the Labrador Sea did not demonstrate a significant relationship with other ice severity indices derived for Hudson Strait and Hudson Bay. The ice severity index displayed some similarities to ice severity derived for other regions of the Labrador Sea. A highly significant volcanic signal was found in the ice severity index indicating a relationship between volcanic dust and the atmospheric circulation responsible for late ice retreat in the Labrador Sea. The number of icebergs sighted each year was also estimated for the period 1751 to 1870.
