Download or read book Limitations and Effects of Waste Disposal on an Ocean Shelf written by Florida Ocean Sciences Institute and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three year study to determine the effects of sewage outfall on macroscopic marine life and human recreation by comparison surveys was made using Boca Raton as a control for the Pompano Beach and Delray, Florida, outfalls. Sand samplings from the sewage lift stations were tested for total fecal and coliform counts, using standard methods. Temperature, salinity and current profiles were done and fluorometric dilution measurements were augmented by Sample Fit Analysis and Gausian Fit Analysis, measuring concentration deviations of the dye tracking of plumes resulting from the rising effluent surface 'boils'. A diffusion model furnished the basis of analysis on the various physical data and charted the fluorometric data. Rules are enumerated for limiting pollution on beaches as set by the state water quality controls.

Download or read book Environmental Oceanography written by Tom Beer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-11-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Environmental Oceanography is the first textbook to link the needs of the coastal oceanographer and the environmental practitioner. The ever-increasing human impact on the environment, and particularly on the coastal zone, has led governments to carefully examine the environmental implications of development proposals. This book provides the background needed to undertake coastal oceanographic investigations and sets them in context by incorporating case studies and sample problems based on the author's experience as an environmental consultant.
Download or read book Earthquake Engineering and Structural Control written by Srinivasan Chandrasekaran and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-29 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquake Engineering and Structural Control: Theory and Applications examines the basics of structural dynamics with its application for earthquake engineering and structural control methods. The objective is not to explain earthquake-resistant design but rather to present different methods of analysis under earthquake and other environmental loads such as fire and physical impact. While presenting fundamental concepts in a simple manner, this book presents structural systems and offshore structures leading to form-dominant design. The response spectrum method and nonlinear time history analysis of structures under earthquake loads are discussed in detail, while the basics of earthquake-resistant design through planning guidelines, as well as introductory seismology, are also covered. Presents dynamic analysis and illustrations of single-degree-of-freedom systems with numerous examples to explain the response spectrum analysis under earthquake and impact loads. Offers detailed solutions to multi-degree-of-freedom systems through numerical methods, supported by MATLAB® examples. Explains the proper application of seismic controls for different classes of structures, including offshore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A keystone reference that presents both up-to-date research and the far-reaching applications of marine biotechnology Featuring contributions from 100 international experts in the field, this five-volume encyclopedia provides comprehensive coverage of topics in marine biotechnology. It starts with the history of the field and delivers a complete overview of marine biotechnology. It then offers information on marine organisms, bioprocess techniques, marine natural products, biomaterials, bioenergy, and algal biotechnology. The encyclopedia also covers marine food and biotechnology applications in areas such as pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and nutraceuticals. Each topic in Encyclopedia of Marine Biotechnology is followed by 10-30 subtopics. The reference looks at algae cosmetics, drugs, and fertilizers; biodiversity; chitins and chitosans; aeroplysinin-1, toluquinol, astaxanthin, and fucoxanthin; and algal and fish genomics. It examines neuro-protective compounds from marine microorganisms; potential uses and medical management of neurotoxic phycotoxins; and the role of metagenomics in exploring marine microbiomes. Other sections fully explore marine microbiology, pharmaceutical development, seafood science, and the new biotechnology tools that are being used in the field today. One of the first encyclopedic books to cater to experts in marine biotechnology Brings together a diverse range of research on marine biotechnology to bridge the gap between scientific research and the industrial arena Offers clear explanations accompanied by color illustrations of the techniques and applications discussed Contains studies of the applications of marine biotechnology in the field of biomedical sciences Edited by an experienced author with contributions from internationally recognized experts from around the globe Encyclopedia of Marine Biotechnology is a must-have resource for researchers, scientists, and marine biologists in the industry, as well as for students at the postgraduate and graduate level. It will also benefit companies focusing on marine biotechnology, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, and bioenergy.

Download or read book Environmental Issues of Deep Sea Mining written by Rahul Sharma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses environmental issues associated with deep-sea mining, with an emphasis on potential impacts, their consequences and the policy perspectives. The book describes the methods and technologies to assess, monitor and mitigate mining impacts on marine environments, and also suggests various approaches for environmental management when conducting deep-sea mining. The volume brings together information and data for researchers, contractors, mining companies, regulators, and NGOs working in the field of deep-sea mining. Section 1 highlights the various environmental issues and discusses methods and approaches that can help in developing environmentally sustainable deep-sea mining. Section 2 details the results and outcomes of studies related to impact assessment of deep-sea mining, and proposes methods for monitoring. Section 3 discusses the need and means for developing data standards and their application to deep-sea mining. Section 4 discusses the policies, approaches, and practices related to deep-sea mining, suggests formats for developing environmental impact statements (EIS) and environmental management plans (EMP), and describes national and international regulations for environmental management. Section 5 concludes the text by putting deep-sea economic activities into an environmental context and conducting techno-economic analyses of deep-sea mining and processing.
