Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many conferences, workshops and meetings annually around the world, each emphasizing a specialty area for scientific exploration and research. Yet in very few instances, if at all, do the multidisciplinary aspects of science get presented so one may see the diversity of dependencies these seemingly disparate disciplines actually have. The Explorers Club and the U. S. National Park Service collaborated to make a first attempt at what will continue to be an "ocean pulse'" effort; conferences combining the aquaculture sciences; the search for underwater antiquities and the marinelbio-technologies utilized to explore these areas. The purpose has been to bring together not just academicians to talk about their finding in the field or the laboratory, but to provide a forum for the practical applications of "technology" to expanding our worlds fisheries as well as to continue to explore our world's oceans; the earth's truly last frontier. After everything is said and done, we still know precious little about our ocean environments. Their influences on our lives are monumental and yet we continue to be very parochial and conservative in our dedication to exploring their depths and resources. We feel confident that this initial effort by our respective groups to awaken a realization in the public and private sectors of the need for a cross-disciplinary approach to scientific research in the marine environment, is a necessity as we approach the 21 st century. Book Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing

Download or read book Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing written by Motoyoshi Ikeda and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-09-18 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing describes how remotely sensed data fields can be applied to help solve problems in ocean-related studies. This timely reference, written by and for oceanographers, emphasizes the application of data to particular physical, chemical, and biological processes related to the ocean and the ocean-atmosphere system. The organization of the book reflects this emphasis, with chapters arranged by process rather than by sensor characteristics. Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing contains comprehensive information on the application of such relevant data sets as sea surface temperature and topography, ocean circulation, sea level variability, wind speed and stress, wave height, solar radiation flux at ocean surfaces, and sea-ice characteristics and ice motion. It also discusses the reliability of remotely sensed data and provides information about the applicability of the various data sets to particular process studies. Its completeness and relevance makes Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing an important reference for modern studies of ocean and coupled ocean-atmosphere processes. Its unique coverage of the physics that govern satellite processes and their applications to oceanography ensures that it will remain an important reference as new satellites are introduced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume follows up and expands on an earlier National Academy of Sciences book. It is the result of an intensive multidisciplinary effort to assess the problems relating to petroleum-derived hydrocarbons in the marine environment. Specifically, it examines the inputs, analytical methods, fates, and effects of petroleum in the marine environment. The section on effects has been expanded significantly, reflecting the extensive scientific effort put forth in determining the effects of petroleum on marine organisms. Other topics discussed include petroleum contamination in specific geographical areas, the potential hazards of this contamination to human health, the impact of oil-related activities in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and the potential impact of petroleum on fisheries.
