Book Ocean Engineering Studies Compiled 1991 Volume 6 Acrylic Windows Typical Applications in Pressure Housings

Download or read book Ocean Engineering Studies Compiled 1991 Volume 6 Acrylic Windows Typical Applications in Pressure Housings written by J. D. Stachiw and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the work in this report was to develop spherical-shell sector windows of acrylic plastic for the deep-diving submersible ALVIN, which has a 12,000-foot depth capability. Free-formed, flanged, acrylic hemispherical shells with a nominal 27-in. median radius have been evaluated for service as external pressure hulls with a nominal 56-ft depth. Because the free-forming fabrication technique produces hemispheres, with variation in thickness and sphericity, uneven stress distribution results during external hydrostatic loading. An acrylic plastic hemispherical dome with a 78-inch outer diameter, 65.25-inch inner diameter and 7-inch-long skirt has been successfully cast, machined, and equipped with a metallic mounting flange. Mounting flanges will allow mating of the cast plastic dome to a surface ship hull. Large and small windows have been found to be more than adequate for man-rated service under 450 psi maximum operational pressure in steel flanges with D sub i (diameter of opening in flange) of 5.000 and 3.000 inches. A recommendation is given for the design, fabrication, proof-testing and inspection in-service of acrylic plastic windows for manned hyperbaric chambers (this includes PTC's, DDC's one atmosphere habitats, high altitude simulation chambers, recompression chambers, etc. Standard window shapes discussed are flat disc, conical frustum and spherical shell sector.

Book Acrylic Plastic Viewpoint for Ocean Engineering Applications Volume I Sections 1 10

Download or read book Acrylic Plastic Viewpoint for Ocean Engineering Applications Volume I Sections 1 10 written by J. D. Stachiw and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For safe performance, viewpoints in pressure vessels for human occupancy require windows that are designed according to conservative engineering principles and fabricated from optical material with proven structural properties. This design handbook presents to the prospective viewport designer a succinct summary of existing data and recommended guidelines for using these data in the design, fabrication, and acceptance testing of acrylic plastic windows. Guidelines are presented for windows operating in the range of -15 to +20,000 poundss per square inch and -40 to 151 F. By utilizing these guidelines a cyclic fatigue life of 10,000 cycles with 40,000 hours of sustained pressurization over a period of 10 years can be assured. Greater cyclic fatigue life or longer sustained loading durations can also be achieved, but the designer must develop design criteria whose safety factors exceed those incorporated in the design guidelines of this handbook. Specifications for acrylic plastic are given to ensure procurement of material whose performance will satisfy the structural, optical, and longevity criteria of this handbook. Samples of quality control forms are also included which, when filled completedly out, will constitute acceptable documentation for subsequent safety design review and certification procedures. Book Ocean Engineering Studies Volume 5 Acrylic Windows Spherical Shell Configurations

Download or read book Ocean Engineering Studies Volume 5 Acrylic Windows Spherical Shell Configurations written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume V of the Ocean Engineering Series is a compilation of three technical reports that discuss the performance of spherical shell acrylic windows having different edge configurations. The coverage describes both spherical shell hemispheres with equatorial flanges and spherical shell sectors with square edges. In addition, their static and cyclic fatigue lives are compared to spherical shell sectors with beveled edges. The superior cyclic fatigue life and lower fabrication costs of spherical shell sectors with square edges made them a more cost-effective design for spherical how windows on manned submersibles than (1) spherical shell windows with beveled edges and (2) hemispherical shell windows with equatorial flanges.

Book Windows for External of Internal Hydrostatic Pressure Vessels Part I Conical Acrylic Windows Under Short term Pressure Application

Download or read book Windows for External of Internal Hydrostatic Pressure Vessels Part I Conical Acrylic Windows Under Short term Pressure Application written by J. D. Stachiw and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conical acrylic windows for fixed ocean-floor structures were placed under short-term loading (pressurization from zero to failure at a fixed rate). The windows, of different thicknesses and different included conical angles, were subjected to various applied pressures, and their subsequent behavior was studied. Acrylic windows, in the form of truncated cones with included angles of 30?, 60?, 90?, 120?, and 150?, were tested to destruction at ambient room temperature by applying hydrostatic pressure to the base of the truncated cone at a continuous rate of 650 psi/min. The pressure at which the windows failed and the magnitude of displacement through the window mounting at different pressure levels were recorded. The ultimate strength of the conical windows (denoted by the critical pressure at which actual failure occurred) was found to be related both to thickness and included conical angle. Graphs are presented defining the relationships of critical pressure versus thickness-to-diameter ratio, and pressure versus magnitude of displacement for the windows. Nondimensional scaling factors for critical pressure and displacement applicable to large-diameter windows are discussed and presented in graphic form. (Author).
