Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health and psychosocial difficulties continue to be an area of concern for the American healthcare system. Unmet needs for children in the foster care system lead to hardships with social participation, healthy relationships, and involvement in all occupations. Despite an understanding that there is a necessity for psychosocial intervention, there is little research supporting positive outcome interventions. Understanding the need of this population the capstone project, via a case report with one child in foster care, aims to develop psychosocial skills via occupations with guidance from current literature and trauma-informed care. Three consecutive interventions were implemented around a specific occupation wuch as play, education, and social participation. Interventions also focused on psychosocial concerns, such as school-functioning, attention, and behavior during the specific occupation. Having focused interventions for a longer period allowed the child to increase their overall participation in each specific occupation and enhance their overall quality of life. Caregiver education and coaching was provided on the interventions and strategies used during the sessions to encourage carryover at home and assist with the caregiver's needs. This case report is intended to increase the available literature for occupational therapy (OT) assessment and intervention for OT's psychosocial role for children in foster care.

Book excerpt: The experiences of four children who were placed in the foster care system, and subsequently adopted, due to experiencing early childhood trauma were examined to identify opportunities where occupational therapy could have been utilized as an intervention. This was done using a semi-structured interview process. The participants were interviewed individually as well in a single group. A snapshot of their current life, a history of their life before adoption and their ways of coping with the difficult situation with which they were dealing, their pros and cons of their personal experiences at the time of placement, professional people and their skilled interventions that could have played a role, and things that were done during their foster care experience and adoption that were helpful were obtained. There were four main stages identified in which occupational therapy interventions could have played a role in the recovery journey for these children ranging from when the children were still in the home with their biological family, to when they were in and out of foster care, when they were placed with what would be come their adoptive family, and other developmental milestones along the way. The results of this study along with the existing literature demonstrate the important role that occupational therapists could fulfill as part of the team working with children in the foster care system and children who are being adopted.

The next chapters provide guidelines for addressing five major elements of occupational therapy service delivery: (1) continuum of services (includes information on the elements of transition, effect of continuum within early intervention and school system settings, and transitions that ensure continuity); (2) clients of services (addresses interactions with clients, client roles and responsibilities, and reimbursement systems); (3) context of intervention (reviews aspects of performance contexts, models of service delivery in the environmental context, and person-activity-environment fit); (4) collaboration (discusses components of collaboration and the collaborative process in service delivery); and (5) outcomes (including student-specific outcomes, development and documentation of the individualized family service plan and individualized education program outcomes, and program-specific outcomes).
