Book Health Effects of Black Carbon

Download or read book Health Effects of Black Carbon written by Nicole A.H. Janssen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black carbon is a good indicator of combustion-related air pollution, and was only recently recognized as a short-lived climate-forcer, which contributes to warming the Earth's atmosphere. This report presents the results of a systematic review of evidence of the health effects of black carbon in ambient air. Epidemiological studies provide sufficient evidence of the association of cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality with exposure to black carbon. Toxicological studies suggest that black carbon may operate as a universal carrier of a wide variety of chemicals of varying toxicity to the human body. Although black carbon may not be a major, directly toxic component of fine particulate matter, reducing people's exposure to particulate matter containing black carbon should reduce its effects on their health, as well as helping to mitigate climate change. Book The Reclassifying of Carbon Black and the Implications for the Tyre and Rubber Industries

Download or read book The Reclassifying of Carbon Black and the Implications for the Tyre and Rubber Industries written by Alan Sheather and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper reviews the health hazards associated with the use of Carbon Black with particular emphasis on its possible carcinogenic properties. The paper is primarily limited to implications for the rubber and tyre industries. A review of current literature on Carbon Black relating to health effects is conducted. The review includes the major study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The National Occupational Health and Safety Council (NOHSC) and articles of particular interest. The current research based on animal studies and epidemiological data shows that evidence exists that Carbon Black is a possible human carcinogen. Other evidence is examined that brings into question some of the research that forms the basis of classifying Carbon Black as a possible carcinogen to humans. This is particularly associated with rat studies and exposure levels. Exposure standards are examined in relation to carcinogenic substances with the conclusion that the Australian exposure standard appears adequate given the current evidence provided by research. This is provisional on the assumption that the exposure standards are being met in Australian industry. Control measures have been suggested for the rubber and tyre industries. It is clear from the review that the current level of research on the hazards associated with the production and use of Carbon Black is not sufficient to make adequate assumptions about the its carcinogenic properties. Suggestions have been made on possible future research that would assist in clarifying the issue. Attention is particularly given to the relationship to exposure levels and possible compounding effects from other substances used in the rubber and tyre industries. " -- Abstract.

The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.
