Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occupancy Right: Its History and Incidents; Together With an Introduction Dealing With Land Tenure in Ancient India This book is the outcome of the thesis approved by the Calcutta University for the 'Onauth Nauth Deb Law Research Prize.' In the Introduction I have discussed in a general way the subject of Land Tenure in ancient India. In the portion of the book dealing with the Incidents of Occupancy Right, I have traversed practically most of the important and relevant provisions of the Bengal Tenancy Act, incorporated the most recent leading cases on the subject, and indicated their basic principles in a way which, I venture to think, has not been done in any of the annotated editions of the Act. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt and Gopa Samanta offer an intimate glimpse into the microcosmic world of “hybrid landscapes.” Focusing on chars—the part-land, part-water, low-lying sandy masses that exist within the riverbeds in the floodplains of lower Bengal—the authors show how, both as real-life examples and as metaphors, chars straddle the conventional categories of land and water, and how people who live on them fluctuate between legitimacy and illegitimacy. The result, a study of human habitation in the nebulous space between land and water, charts a new way of thinking about land, people, and people's ways of life.

Book Water Knowledge and the Environment in Asia

Download or read book Water Knowledge and the Environment in Asia written by Ravi Baghel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic transformation of our planet by human actions has been heralded as the coming of the new epoch of the Anthropocene. Human relations with water raise some of the most urgent questions in this regard. The starting point of this book is that these changes should not be seen as the result of monolithic actions of an undifferentiated humanity, but as emerging from diverse ways of relating to water in a variety of settings and knowledge systems. With its large population and rapid demographic and socioeconomic change, Asia provides an ideal context for examining how varied forms of knowledge pertaining to water encounter and intermingle with one another. While it is difficult to carry out comprehensive research on water knowledge in Asia due to its linguistic, political and cultural fragmentation, the topic nevertheless has relevance across boundaries. By using a carefully chosen selection of case studies in a variety of locations and across diverse disciplines, the book demonstrates commonalities and differences in everyday water practices around Asia while challenging both romantic presumptions and Eurocentrism. Examples presented include class differences in water use in the megacity of Delhi, India; the impact of radiation on water practices in Fukushima, Japan; the role of the King in hydraulic practices in Thailand, and ritual irrigation in Bali, Indonesia.
