Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Larvae of Temperate Australian Fishes the larval stages of 124 fish species from 57 families which occur in fresh water, estuarine and inshore marine waters of temperate Australia are described. Each family chapter includes a summary of the taxonomy and life history information for the family, a list of the main characters used to identify larvae to family level, a table of the meristic characters of the genera found in temperate Australian waters, and a list of families whose larvae may be confused with those of the family being described, and the characters which will distinguish them. For each species there is information on adult distribution, importance to fisheries, spawning, diagnostic characters of larvae, and larval morphology and pigmentation. With over 570 scientific illustrations of larval fishes throughout, and a concise and accurate text, this is an essential reference for anyone, conducting taxonomic, ecological and fisheries research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the biology, culture techniques, research and development, and future of the fishery of some of the most important bivalve mollusks cultured throughout the world. The book emphasizes those species that are truly cultured during some part of their life cycle rather than those that are harvested from natural populations. Graphs and figures summarize fisheries information and provide quick access to important production figures. Species covered include oysters, soft-shell and hard-shell clams, scallops, mussels, pearl oysters, razor clams, cockles and giant clams. Geographic areas featured include United States, Mexico, South and Central America, Europe, India, Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and the coral atolls of the Pacific Ocean. Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture brings together the lifetime efforts of the late Dr. Winston Menzel to characterize and improve bivalve mollusk culture worldwide. Aquaculturalists, private oyster and bivalve culturalists, and fisheries scientists will find this book to be an invaluable guide to bivalve mollusk culture.

The volume is about getting a 'good governance' grip on this important industry. The book highlights the numerous law and policy issues that must be addressed in the search for effective regulation of aquaculture. Those issues include among others: the equitable and fair assignment of property rights; the design of effective dispute resolution mechanisms; clarification of what maritime laws apply to aquaculture; adoption of a proper taxation system for aquaculture; resolution of aboriginal offshore title and rights claims; recognition of international trade law restrictions such as labeling limitations and food safety requirements; and determination of whether genetically modified fish should be allowed and if so under what controls. This book will appeal to a broad range of audiences: undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic researchers, policy makers, NGOs, practicing lawyers and industry representatives.

Book Occupational Risk Control

Download or read book Occupational Risk Control written by Derek Viner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational Risk Control contains a practical theory of risk based on the principles of the physical sciences. The book provides details of the implications of such theory for real-world practice that will be of value to the legislator, general or specialist risk engineer, scientist, academic, student, risk/safety practitioners as well as managers of industrial or commercial undertakings. The contents are a result of over 40 years of experience in researching, teaching and consulting. The theoretical base is relevant peer-reviewed physical sciences literature. Such literature points out the necessity of understanding the principles that enable processes resulting in damage and loss to be explained and it enables the risk arising from the uncertainty of these processes to be objectively defined, described as well as estimated using real number values. Of these principles and their applications a student once remarked “this should be compulsory study for all engineering students”. A critical assessment of the pervasive but unscientific accident terminology is included to assist the reader to reflect on the value of this. In a field in which there is a plethora of commercial and pseudo-academic practical tools based on accident theory, this text provides a foundation for the thinking academic and practitioner to critically evaluate the meaning, scope and value of such tools. The text has chapters on accident theory, damage process models, risk, risk estimation, risk control, risk evaluation, the classification and analysis of risks, risk numeracy, the management of risks in general and the management of technical risks in particular. There are notes on accident investigation and the role of the risk adviser. A substantial glossary of terms is included. The text is supported by a dedicated web site (www.derekviner.com) which contains discussion and examples of topics as well as a blog.

Book Spawning Migration of the European Eel

Download or read book Spawning Migration of the European Eel written by Guido van den Thillart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater eels are almost infinitely improbable creatures. They spawn and die in the middle of the ocean, often associated with undersea mountains. Their tra- parent, leaf-like larvae move with ocean currents for months or years until they approach the mouths of freshwater rivers. Then they undergo a dramatic transf- mation in morphology, physiology and behavior. They move from their planktonic oceanic environment, migrate upstream and live for several years as apex fre- water predators. Then, almost impossibly, as they become sexually mature, they reverse their migration downstream to the ocean and back to spawning grounds to complete their life cycle. The dramatic changes in their life cycles are incredible. The efforts to unravel the details of their life history have been truly daunting. Much of the past research was the work of dedicated individuals who devoted their lifetime research to these fishes. Freshwater eels merit a separate chapter in almost any textbook dealing with ichthyology, marine biology or animal migration. We know a great deal about some aspects of the biology of freshwater eels. However, our understanding of their bi- ogy still resembles a work of art as much as a work of science. To some it appears like the sweeping brush strokes of a Japanese Zen landscape, to others it resembles the work of a French impressionist, and to still others it appears as magic realism.
