Book Sources and Methods in Indigenous Studies

Download or read book Sources and Methods in Indigenous Studies written by Chris Andersen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources and Methods in Indigenous Studies is a synthesis of changes and innovations in methodologies in Indigenous Studies, focusing on sources over a broad chronological and geographical range. Written by a group of highly respected Indigenous Studies scholars from across an array of disciplines, this collection offers insight into the methodological approaches contributors take to research, and how these methods have developed in recent years. The book has a two-part structure that looks, firstly, at the theoretical and disciplinary movement of Indigenous Studies within history, literature, anthropology, and the social sciences. Chapters in this section reveal that, while engaging with other disciplines, Indigenous Studies has forged its own intellectual path by borrowing and innovating from other fields. In part two, the book examines the many different areas with which sources for indigenous history have been engaged, including the importance of family, gender, feminism, and sexuality, as well as various elements of expressive culture such as material culture, literature, and museums. Together, the chapters offer readers an overview of the dynamic state of the field in Indigenous Studies. This book shines a spotlight on the ways in which scholarship is transforming Indigenous Studies in methodologically innovative and exciting ways, and will be essential reading for students and scholars in the field.

Book Environmental History in the Pacific World

Download or read book Environmental History in the Pacific World written by J.R. McNeill and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a set of key articles from the last 30 years pertaining to the environmental history of the Pacific basin. It aims to treat the islands and waters of the Pacific as well as the lands around the Rim, from New Zealand to Japan, to California, to Chile, and is the first work of environmental history to take this inclusive view of the Pacific basin. The focus is mainly on recent centuries but, as environmental history requires, at times the work also takes the very long view of millennia. Several of the articles seek to bring a broad Pacific perspective to bear on their subjects, while others use Pacific-basin examples to try to establish broader theoretical points of interest to all who are drawn to the study of the interactions between nature and culture. The book includes a bibliography of Pacific-basin environmental history and an introduction that aims to sketch the contours and possible future directions of the field.

Book Ko te Whenua te Utu Land is the Price

Download or read book Ko te Whenua te Utu Land is the Price written by M P K Sorrenson and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, Keith Sorrenson – one of New Zealand’s leading historians and himself of mixed Maori and Pakeha descent – has dived deeper than anyone into the story of two peoples in New Zealand. In this new book, Sorrenson brings together his major writing from the last 56 years into a powerful whole – covering topics from the origins of Maori (and Pakeha ideas about those origins), through land purchases and the King Movement of the nineteenth century, and on to twentieth-century politics and the new history of the Waitangi Tribunal. Throughout his career, Sorrenson has been concerned with the international context for New Zealand history while also attempting to understand and explain Maori conceptions and Pakeha ideas from the inside. And he has been determined to tell the real story of Maori losses of land and their political responses as, in the face of Pakeha colonisation, they became a minority in their own country. Ko te Whenua te Utu / Land is the Price is a powerful history of Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand.

Book Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara

Download or read book Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara written by Karl von Scherzer and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara in three volumes is an account of the voyage known as the "Novara expedition of 1857–1859" published by Karl Scherzer. The Novara expedition of 1857–1859 was the first large-scale scientific, around-the-world mission of the Austrian Imperial navy. The journey lasted 2 years 3 months, from 30 April 1857 until 30 August 1859. Preparation for the research journey was made by the "Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna" and by specialized scholars under direction of the geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter and the zoologist Georg von Frauenfeld. The first coca plant (cocaine) investigations, in particular on St. Paul Island, the Nicobar Islands, and on New Zealand (first geological mapping by Hochstetter), created the bases for future geological research. The oceanographic research revolutionized oceanography and hydrography.
