Download or read book Medicine in Society written by Andrew Wear and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-27 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social history of medicine over the last fifteen years has redrawn the boundaries of medical history. Specialised papers and monographs have contributed to our knowledge of how medicine has affected society and how society has shaped medicine. This book synthesises, through a series of essays, some of the most significant findings of this 'new social history' of medicine. The period covered ranges from ancient Greece to the present time. While coverage is not exhaustive, the reader is able to trace how medicine in the West developed from an unlicensed open market place, with many different types of practitioners in the classical period, to the nineteenth- and twentieth-century professionalised medicine of State influence, of hospitals, public health medicine, and scientific medicine. The book also covers innovatory topics such as patient-doctor relationships, the history of the asylum, and the demographic background to the history of medicine.

Book Private Madhouses in England 1640 1815

Download or read book Private Madhouses in England 1640 1815 written by Leonard Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the origins and early development of private mental health-care in England, showing that the current spectacle of commercially-based participation in key elements of service provision is no new phenomenon. In 1815, about seventy per cent of people institutionalised because of insanity were being kept in private ‘madhouses’. The opening four chapters detail the emergence of these madhouses and demonstrate their increasing presence in London and across the country during the long eighteenth century. Subsequent chapters deal with specific aspects in greater depth - the insane patients themselves, their characteristics, and the circumstances surrounding admissions; the madhouse proprietors, their business activities, personal attributes and professional qualifications or lack of them; changing treatment practices and the principles that informed them. Finally, the book explores conditions within the madhouses, which ranged from the relatively enlightened to the seriously defective, and reveals the experiences, concerns and protests of their many critics.

Book Cure Comfort and Safe Custody

Download or read book Cure Comfort and Safe Custody written by Leonard Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the pioneer early county asylums, which were intended to provide for the 'cure', and 'safe custody' of people suffering from the ravages of insanity. It considers the origins of the asylums, how they were managed, the people who staffed them, their treatment practices, and the experiences of the people who were incarcerated. 'Community care' in the late 20th century has led us to abandon the network of nineteenth century lunatic asylums. This book reminds us of the ideals that lay behind them. The book contains extensive material regarding particular cities/counties, e.g. Nottingham, Lincoln, Stafford, Wakefield, Lancaster, Bedford, West Riding, Norfolk, Cornwall, Dorset, Suffolk, etc.

Book Lunatic Hospitals in Georgian England 1750 1830

Download or read book Lunatic Hospitals in Georgian England 1750 1830 written by Leonard Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lunatic Hospitals in Georgian England, 1750–1830 constitutes the first comprehensive study of the philanthropic asylum system in Georgian England. Using original research and drawing upon a wide range of expertise on the history of mental health this book demonstrates the crucial role of the lunatic hospitals in the early development of a national system of psychiatric institutions. These hospitals were to form an essential historical link in the emergence of a national system of institutional provision for mentally disordered people. They provided important prototypes for the subsequent development of a network of state-sponsored lunatic asylums during the nineteenth century. This is an impressive volume which covers various areas including: the provincial lunatic hospitals managing the hospital managing the insane. This book will interest specialist historians as well as mental health professionals and people interested in local and regional studies.
