This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. - Gabriel Compayr.

Download or read book The Age of Conversation written by Benedetta Craveri and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, an award-winning look at French salons and the women who presided over them In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, between the reign of Louis XIII and the Revolution, French aristocratic society developed an art of living based on a refined code of good manners. Conversation, which began as a way of passing time, eventually became the central ritual of social life. In the salons, freed from the rigidity of court life, it was women who dictated the rules and presided over exchanges among socialites, writers, theologians, and statesmen. They contributed decisively to the development of the modern French language, new literary forms, and debates over philosophical and scientific ideas. With a cast of characters both famous and unknown, ranging from the Marquise de Rambouillet to Madame de Sta‘l, and including figures like Ninon de Lenclos, the Marquise de Sevigne, and Madame de Lafayette, as well as Pascal, La Rochefoucauld, Diderot, and Voltaire, Benedetta Craveri traces the history of this worldly society that carried the art of sociability to its supreme perfection–and ultimately helped bring on the Revolution that swept it all away.

Book Aspects of Linguistic Variation

Download or read book Aspects of Linguistic Variation written by Daniël Olmen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistic variation is a topic of ongoing interest to the field. Its description and its explanations continue to intrigue scholars from many different backgrounds. By taking a deliberately broad perspective on the matter, covering not only crosslinguistic and diachronic but also intralinguistic and interspeaker variation and examining phenomena ranging from negation over connectives to definite articles in well- and lesser-known languages, the volume furthers our understanding of variation in general. The papers offer new insights into, among other things, the theoretical notion of comparative concepts, the social or mental nature of language structure, the areal factor in lexical typology and the diachronic implications of semantic maps. The collection will thus be of relevance to typologists and historical linguists, as well as to people studying variation within the areas of cognitive and functional linguistics.

Book Education and the French Revolution

Download or read book Education and the French Revolution written by H. C. Barnard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution was the first of the great social upheavals which transformed European society; its effects on the French national educational system and its wider influence on education is obviously important. Little has been written on the topic and Professor Barnard offers a modern study. He begins with a survey of the educational system under the Ancien Régime and describes the criticisms and schemes of reform which had already been offered before the Revolution. Then follow accounts of the educational activities of the revolutionary assemblies and the individual institutions set up during the period. The story ends with an account of the lasting influence of these reforms. Throughout, Professor Barnard emphasises the importance of the concept of education as a fundamental civic right and the duty of the state to provide and regulate it. The book gives the student of the history of education, of social history and modern France a useful survey of a central topic.

Book Society of Pleasures

Download or read book Society of Pleasures written by Kathryn A. Hoffmann and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 1997 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the days of Louis XIV, the experience of pleasure was as much a social and political tool as as essential ingredient in personal life. Kathryn Hoffmann, in an interdisciplinary volume, explores this 'society of pleasures' by studying the strange couplings of pleasure, power and knowledge which took shape within it. She analyzes the politics of pleasure and knowledge arising in notions of public rights, conundrums of aesthetics, and the politics of erotics. In so doing, Hoffmann reveals that the society of pleasures was not law, or policy, or an exact procedure of totalizing power, but a state and a people where the logic of pleasure always contained the trap of violent oppression, a place where desire and forces, the caress and the grip, informed and fed upon each other. A unique work which manages to intertwine both canonical literary works and documents from the margins of history, philosophy, and gastronomy, Society of Pleasures locates the passions and essence of a legendary society and traces the routes to the modern in the fissures of an absolutist dream.

  • Pages : 454 pages

Download or read book Graphic History written by Philip Benedict and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 2007 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suite of forty prints published in Geneva in 1570 depicting the wars, massacres and troubles of the French Wars of Religion may have been the first picture history made in woodcuts or etchings that promised a geenral public a true view of great events of the recent past. This richly illustrated study reconstructs the gradual elaboration of this experimental work, situating it within the previously untold story of the use of the graphic arts to report the news in the fist centuries of European printmaking. Successive chapters explore the pictorial traditions that inspired the printmakers, examine how they gathered their information, assess the reliability of the scenes, and analyze the historical vision informing the series. Part 2 reproduces the full suite with commentary in double page fold-outs. Through the study of a single print series, lost chapters in the history of jorunalism, of the graphic arts, and of Protestant historical consciousness re-emerge.

Book The Lady in the Looking Glass

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'People should not leave looking-glasses hanging in their rooms any more than they should leave open cheque books or letters confessing some hideous crime.' 'If she concealed so much and knew so much one must prize her open with the first tool that came to hand - the imagination.' Virginia Woolf's writing tested the boundaries of modern fiction, exploring the depths of human consciousness and creating a new language of sensation and thought. Sometimes impressionistic, sometimes experimental, sometimes brutally cruel, sometimes surprisingly warm and funny, these five stories describe love lost, friendships formed and lives questioned. Book The Judgment of Palaemon

Download or read book The Judgment of Palaemon written by Philip Ford and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Virgil's third Eclogue, Palaemon concludes the poetry competition between Menalcas and Damoetas by saying that he cannot choose between them, a judgment that is emblematic of the contest between Neo-Latin and vernacular poetry in Renaissance France. Both forms of poetry draw on similar roots, both are equally accomplished, and the contest between them is largely amicable. The Judgment of Palaement illustrates the almost symbiotic relationship between Renaissance Latin and French poetry, while exploring poets' motivation for choosing one language over another, the different challenges each form of writing involved, and the extent of the collaboration between different language communities. It focuses on some of the major writers of the period, as well as less known ones, and on genres specific to humanist poetry. It shows that composing in Latin was often considered more natural than writing in the vernacular, at a time when many Frenchmen's mother tongue was a non-standard French dialect or distinct language.
