Book excerpt: Many individuals have shown concern with the current statistical procedure employed by most social scientists, namely that of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). Alternative techniques do exist, such as nonparametric testing, which focuses less on assumptions and uses simpler analyses, and observation oriented modeling (OOM), a new modeling paradigm created by Dr. James Grice as a way to focus on data at the individual level. Using these three techniques (a parametric ANOVA, a nonparametric Quade test, and OOM's ordinal pattern analysis) a dataset collected on the QWERTY effect was analyzed to look into the effect of typability of keypress combinations on pleasantness ratings for words. The analyses revealed that the nonparametric test was more powerful and capable of distinguishing more statistical differences and larger effect sizes than the parametric test. These tests are also compared to the OOM test which provided information about how individuals matched on this expected pleasantness pattern. These incongruent findings indicate a need for a greater understanding of all available statistical techniques and more investigation into the proper use of these techniques.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the abiding intellectual inertia in scientific psychology in relation to the discipline’s engagement with problematic beliefs and assumptions underlying mainstream research practices, despite repeated critical analyses which reveal the weaknesses, and in some cases complete inappropriateness, of these methods. Such paradigmatic inertia is especially troublesome for a scholarly discipline claiming status as a science. The book offers penetrating analyses of many (albeit not all) of the most important areas where mainstream practices require either compelling justifications for their continuation or adjustments – possibly including abandonment – toward more apposite alternatives. Specific areas of concern addressed in this book include the systemic misinterpretation of statistical knowledge; the prevalence of a conception of measurement at odds with yet purporting to mimic the natural sciences; the continuing widespread reliance on null hypothesis testing; and the continuing resistance within psychology to the explicit incorporation of qualitative methods into its methodological toolbox. Network-oriented modeling allows high-level cognitive, affective and social models in the form of (cyclic) graphs to be constructed, which can be automatically transformed into executable simulation models. The modeling format used makes it easy to take into account theories and findings about complex cognitive and social processes, which often involve dynamics based on interrelating cycles. Accordingly, it makes it possible to address complex phenomena such as the integration of emotions within cognitive processes of all kinds, of internal simulations of the mental processes of others, and of social phenomena such as shared understandings and collective actions. A major issue is what kind of model is best suited for a given task. This book is about the supervision of continuous dynamical systems. Such systems are typically described by di?erential equations. However, this does notautomaticallymeanthatdi?erentialequationsarepropermodelsforso- ing supervision tasks. Instead, this book and recent approaches in literature show that supervision tasks do in general not require the use of such precise modelsasdi?erentialequations.Thisisofinterestbecauseuncertainties,t- ically occurring in supervision, make the use of precise models very di?cult. Alternative approaches therefore use less precise models such as discrete– event descriptions to solve supervision tasks on a higher level of abstraction. Discrete–event descriptions in form of automata are one of the key elements of this book. To reach this higher level of abstraction, uncertainties by qu- tisation are introduced on purpose, taking into account a loss of precision. This is one of the main di?erence to other approaches. When using nume- calmodelsliketransferfunctionsordi?erentialequations,uncertaintiesmake the analysis more di?cult. Not so here, where the system is described on a qualitative level on which uncertainties are naturally incorporated. The book presents a new way to describe systems for supervision. Preparing this book I learned that the key to solve supervision problems is simplicity.

The many excellent texts available in the behavioral area do not give an adequate picture of this topic, and this is particularly unfortunate because testing and evaluation (T&E) is an integral part of human-machine system design and operation. The emphasis in this book is on why and how to conduct such testing. One of its outstanding features is its pragmatism; based on his past experience in system testing, the author recognizes the difficulties that occur in testing and indicates how these may be overcome or minimized. Special attention has been paid to the context in which T&E is conducted. Although the book contains detailed procedures for performing T&E, the logic and the conceptual foundation of testing have not been overlooked. Comparisons are made with laboratory-centered experimentation. For those with research interests, the author points out the many research questions that can be answered by system testing. An illustrative case history of a T&E program for a fictional system has been included to provide ``real life'' context. Special problem areas in T&E are emphasized, in particular human error data collection, the evaluation of computerized systems and software, the measurement of maintenance technician and team performance; workload and training effectiveness testing. Special attention is also paid to environmental testing (e.g. temperature, lighting, noise, vibration, etc.). One chapter reviews all the relevant T&E literature including government documents that may not be readily available to the general reader. As part of the preparation for writing this text a survey was made of 45 distinguished T&E specialists in order to determine their characteristic T&E practices.The book will be useful not only to the human factors professional who specializes in T&E, but to all students and practitioners interested in human factors and work measurement.
