Book Objects That Talk and Teach

Download or read book Objects That Talk and Teach written by Louis T. Talbot and published by Solid Christian Books. This book was released on with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of presenting the Gospel message in terms which the little child can understand is inestimable. During His earthly ministry, our Lord Jesus Christ recognized this need for simplicity, and constantly taught the people spiritual lessons through reference to objects with which they were most familiar. The wise pastor today must be ever on the alert to employ this method in presenting the truth to the children of his congregation. Since fully eighty-five per cent of our knowledge is acquired through the eye-gate, this avenue of approach should be more widely utilized than is generally the case. As a part of the morning service each Lord’s day, in the Church of the Open Door, Los Angeles, California, the pastor, Rev. Louis T. Talbot, gives an object lesson for children, presenting vital spiritual truths applicable to young and old alike. To meet the demand of many who know of this plan, and in order to furnish practical examples for those desiring to follow this method, Mr. Talbot is making available much of the material which he has recently used. It gives me great pleasure to write this note of commendation of the illuminating and appealing lessons which have been used with such benefit in the services of the Church of the Open Door. I, for one, rejoice greatly that this suggestive material is now accessible to all those who seek to utilize the object lesson method in leading the children into a deeper interest in the things of God. Elbert L. McCreery. Dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, March, 1934.

Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book Building Verbal Imitation in Toddlers

Download or read book Building Verbal Imitation in Toddlers written by Laura Mize and published by . This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Mize, pediatric speech-language pathologist and founder of www.teachmetotalk.com, details the hierarchy of imitation skills she teaches to therapists in seminars throughout the country and in her best-selling therapy manuals and DVDs. Many times therapists and parents don’t see success with late talking toddlers because the child needs an “in-between” step to help him learn the next component for expressive skill development. Our professional plans can also fail when we use techniques that are too clinical for parents to be able to remember and practice at home. This eight level approach is contained in Building Verbal Imitation in Toddlers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for all university and college teachers interested in experimenting with discussion methods in their classrooms. Download or read book Talk to Me written by Paola Antonelli and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2011 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Talk to Me thrives on an important late 20th-century cultural development in design: a shift from the centrality of function to that of meaning. From this new perspective, objects contain information that goes well beyond their immediate use or appearance, providing access to complex systems and networks and acting as gateways and interpreters. Whether openly and actively, or in subtle, subliminal ways, things talk to us, and designers write the initial script that lets us develop and improvise the dialogue. Talk to Me focuses on objects that involve direct interaction, such as interfaces, information systems, communication devices, and projects that establish a practical, emotional or even sensual connection between their users and entities such as cities, companies, governmental institutions, as well as other people. The featured objects range in date from the early 1980s - beginning with the first Graphic User Interface, developed by Xerox Parc in 1981 - with particular attention given to projects from the last five years and to several ones currently in development. Included are a diverse array of examples, from computer and machine interfaces to websites, video games, devices and tools, and installations. Organized thematically, Talk to Me features essays by Paola Antonelli, Jamer Hunt, Alexandra Midel, Kevin Slavin, and Koi Vinh. By introducing design practices that are becoming increasingly crucial to our world, the book presents a highly distilled sample of today's best design production that uses technology in creative and unexpected ways, showing how rich and deep design's influence will be on our future.
