The objective of the study was the definition of main rocket engine systems applicable to advanced cryogenic oxygen/hydrogen space vehicles. The study described in this volume was directed toward non-aerospike nozzle configurations to provide designs for comparison to the aerospike configuration described in Volume 1. Preliminary engine designs were prepared for thrust levels from 8,000 to 50,000 pounds for several nozzle and engine system configurations. A detailed design and analysis was carried out for a selected 25,000-pound-thrust engine configuration. The analysis included the effects of variations in certain engine system design conditions, development programs and costs, failure mode, effects, operational characteristics, and maintenance plans. The single-panel aerospike engine design point corresponds to the demonstrator thrust chamber configuration, specifically, chamber pressure and area ratio equal to 750 psia and 110:1, respectively. A second engine system and component design and operational description also is provided for the selected optimum aerospike engine employing a double-panel thrust chamber cooling circuit. The double-panel aerospike engine design has a chamber pressure and area ratio of 1000 psia and 200:1, respectively. These engine systems are designed to provide 5:1 throttling and off-design mixture ratio operation. The study effort also included the effects of variations in certain design parameters on engine performance, weight, propellant flow balances, life capability, development time and cost, and maintenance requirements. Additional parametric information is provided for design thrust levels between 8000 and 50,000 pounds. (Author).

Book excerpt: In the development of modern rotorcraft vehicles, many unique challenges emerge due to the highly coupled nature of individual rotorcraft design disciplines therefore, the use of an integrated product and process development (IPPD) methodology is necessary to drive the design solution. Through the use of parallel design and analysis, this approach achieves the design synthesis of numerous product and process requirements that is essential in ultimately satisfying the customers demands. Over the past twenty years, Georgia Techs Center for Excellence in Rotorcraft Technology (CERT) has continuously focused on refining this IPPD approach within its rotorcraft design course by using the annual American Helicopter Society (AHS) Student Design Competition as the design requirement catalyst. Despite this extensive experience, however, the documentation of this preliminary rotorcraft design approach has become out of date or insufficient in addressing a modern IPPD methodology. In no design discipline is this need for updated documentation more prevalent than in propulsion system design, specifically in the area of gas turbine technology. From an academic perspective, the vast majority of current propulsion system design resources are focused on fixed-wing applications with very limited reference to the use of turboshaft engines. Additionally, most rotorcraft design resources are centered on aerodynamic considerations and largely overlook propulsion system integration. This research effort is aimed at bridging this information gap by developing a preliminary turboshaft engine design methodology that is applicable to a wide range of potential rotorcraft propulsion system design problems. The preliminary engine design process begins by defining the design space through analysis of the initial performance and mission requirements dictated in a given request for proposal (RFP). Engine cycle selection is then completed using tools such as GasTurb and the NASA Engine Performance Program (NEPP) to conduct thorough parametric and engine performance analysis. Basic engine component design considerations are highlighted to facilitate configuration trade studies and to generate more detailed engine performance and geometric data. Throughout this approach, a comprehensive engine design case study is incorporated based on a two-place, turbine training helicopter known as the Georgia Tech Generic Helicopter (GTGH). This example serves as a consistent propulsion system design reference highlighting the level of integration and detail required for each step of the preliminary turboshaft engine design methodology.

Book excerpt: The General Electric Reliable and Affordable Controls effort under the NASA Advanced Subsonic Technology (AST) Program has designed, fabricated, and tested advanced controls hardware and software to reduce emissions and improve engine safety and reliability. The original effort consisted of four elements: 1) a Hydraulic Multiplexer; 2) Active Combustor Control; 3) a Variable Displacement Vane Pump (VDVP); and 4) Intelligent Engine Control. The VDVP and Intelligent Engine Control elements were cancelled due to funding constraints and are reported here only to the state they progressed. The Hydraulic Multiplexing element developed and tested a prototype which improves reliability by combining the functionality of up to 16 solenoids and servo-valves into one component with a single electrically powered force motor. The Active Combustor Control element developed intelligent staging and control strategies for low emission combustors. This included development and tests of a Controlled Pressure Fuel Nozzle for fuel sequencing, a Fuel Multiplexer for individual fuel cup metering, and model-based control logic. Both the Hydraulic Multiplexer and Controlled Pressure Fuel Nozzle system were cleared for engine test. The Fuel Multiplexer was cleared for combustor rig test which must be followed by an engine test to achieve full maturation. It is an engineering science with close links to supersonics and engine design. Within this field, many of the most important results have been experimental. The principal facilities have been wind tunnels and related devices, which have produced flows with speeds up to orbital velocity. Why is this important? Hypersonics has had two major applications. The first has been to provide thermal protection during atmospheric reentry. Success in this enterprise has supported ballistic-missile nose cones, has returned strategic reconnaissance photos from orbit and astronauts from the Moon, and has even dropped an instrument package into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The second application has involved high-speed propulsion and has sought to develop the scramjet as an advanced airbreathing ramjet. Atmospheric entry today is fully mature as an engineering discipline, but work with its applications continues to reach for new achievements. Studies of scramjets still seek full success, in which such engines can accelerate a vehicle without the use of rockets. Hence, there is much to do in this area as well.
