Book The Ghost of O Reillys Mansion

Download or read book The Ghost of O Reillys Mansion written by Gail Poole and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calie had spent every summer since she was eleven with her Aunt Julie at her mansion in Maine. She had fallen in love with it from the first sight. It was said to be haunted, and she recalled many weird and unusual happenings that left her in suspense during those visits. Yet she attributed it to all the tales and scenarios her aunt had told and adamantly insisted a ghost shared the mansion.Calie was skeptical but never ruled it out because she had always been intrigued by the unknown and especially the spiritual life after death. Her aunt had become obsessed with the mysterious secrets that surrounded the strange death of Manson and Francine O'Reilly and later their son, Jacob. The writer's instinct in her was awakened. There was a story there that needed to be told, and she was convinced many secrets to be unraveled. She had convinced Calie to give up her reporter's job at the New-York Tribune and come and coauthor a book about the O'Reillys. Her aunt had always told her she was meant to be an author. "It is your forte, my dear, don't waste it." Being a renowned author in her own right, in addition to owning her own publishing company, she had helped launch Calie's career.Calie was saddened by her aunt's sudden death and was summoned by her lawyer to come and handle Aunt Julie's affairs. Little did she know how drastically her life was about to change.

Book Visiting the Fallen Arras South

Download or read book Visiting the Fallen Arras South written by Peter Hughes and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Ypres, Arras was a front line town throughout the Great War. From March 1916 it became home to the British Army and it remained so until the Advance to Victory was well under way. In 1917 the Battle of Arras came and went. It occupied barely half a season, but was then largely forgotten; the periods before and after it have been virtually ignored, and yet the Arras sector was always important and holding it was never easy or without incident; death, of course, was never far away. The area around Arras is as rich in Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries as anywhere else on the Western Front, including the Somme and Ypres, and yet these quiet redoubts with their headstones proudly on parade still remain largely unvisited. This book is the story of the men who fell and who are now buried in those cemeteries; and the telling of their story is the telling of what it was like to be a soldier on the Western Front. Arras-South is the companion volume to Arras-North and is written by the same author. It contains comprehensive coverage of over 60 Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries to be found in Arras and to the south of the town. It has a wealth of gallantry awards, including their citations, and features hundreds of officers and other ranks who fell, not just at the Battle of Arras in 1917, but also many of those who died in 1916 and the final year of the war. Many small actions, raids and operations are described in a book that tells the story of warfare on the Western Front through the lives of those who fought and died on the battlefields of Arras. There are personalities, interesting characters and the well-connected, ordinary soldiers and many unsung heroes, families torn apart by war, fathers, sons and brothers, poets and padres. There is a link to Ulster and the Curragh Incident and a connection to King George V and Queen Mary, a hero of the Messina earthquake disaster in 1908, a father whose search for his son's grave reaches its sad conclusion, a mysterious death in woodland, the moving spectacle of men waiting outside makeshift confessionals in a barn lit by candlelight before going up the line into battle, and a man whose father was a close collaborator with Sir Fabian Ware during the early days of the War Graves Registration Commission; there is even a remarkable prehistoric discovery and an improbable tale regarding an African hawk eagle that would not be out of place in a Harry Potter film. This is an essential reference guide for anyone visiting Arras and its battlefields.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Bioarchaeology in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Bioarchaeology in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands written by Marc Oxenham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the bioarchaeology of Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands has seen enormous progress. This new and exciting research is synthesised, contextualised and expanded upon in The Routledge Handbook of Bioarchaeology in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The volume is divided into two broad sections, one dealing with mainland and island Southeast Asia, and a second section dealing with the Pacific islands. A multi-scalar approach is employed to the bio-social dimensions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands with contributions alternating between region and/or site specific scales of operation to the individual or personal scale. The more personal level of osteobiographies enriches the understanding of the lived experience in past communities. Including a number of contributions from sub-disciplinary approaches tangential to bioarchaeology the book provides a broad theoretical and methodological approach. Providing new information on the globally relevant topics of farming, population mobility, subsistence and health, no other volume provides such a range of coverage on these important themes.

This research sheds light on the use of this historic symbol to protect the bodies and souls of the deceased, across several thousand years and multiple countries.
