Book The Great Chicago Fire and the Myth of Mrs O Leary s Cow

Download or read book The Great Chicago Fire and the Myth of Mrs O Leary s Cow written by Richard F. Bales and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 swallowed up more than three square miles in two days, leaving thousands homeless and 300 dead. Throughout history, the fire has been attributed to Mrs. O'Leary, an immigrant Irish milkmaid, and her cow. On one level, the tale of Mrs. O'Leary's cow is merely the quintessential urban legend. But the story also represents a means by which the upper classes of Chicago could blame the fire's chaos on a member of the working poor. Although that fire destroyed the official county documents, some land tract records were saved. Using this and other primary source information, Richard F. Bales created a scale drawing that reconstructed the O'Leary neighborhood. Next he turned to the transcripts--more than 1,100 handwritten pages--from an investigation conducted by the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners, which interviewed 50 people over the course of 12 days. The board's final report, published in the Chicago newspapers on December 12, 1871, indicates that commissioners were unable to determine the cause of the fire. And yet, by analyzing the 50 witnesses' testimonies, the author concludes that the commissioners could have determined the cause of the fire had they desired to do so. Being more concerned with saving their own reputation from post-fire reports of incompetence, drunkenness and bribery, the commissioners failed to press forward for an answer. The author has uncovered solid evidence as to what really caused the Great Chicago Fire.

Book O Leary of the Underworld

Download or read book O Leary of the Underworld written by Kate Auty and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful investigation that reveals the deep injustices inflicted on Aboriginal people in the Kimberley in the 1920s In June 1926, a posse of police officers and white civilians murdered at least twenty Aboriginal people near the Forrest River Mission in the Kimberley. After the massacre, a conspiracy of silence descended. Witnesses vanished. Charges against two of the officers were dropped for insufficient evidence. One of the massacre’s perpetrators was Bernard O’Leary, a former soldier whose land holding was known as ‘the underworld’. At the 1927 royal commission into the killings, O’Leary was portrayed by his lawyer as a simple honest bushman who had been framed. In this powerful account, Kate Auty argues that O’Leary was in fact ‘vicious, brazen and a bullshitter’, with ‘a propensity for brutality’. Although never charged, he played a leading role in the murders, and his duplicitous testimony thwarted the commission’s work. In electric prose, Auty depicts O’Leary as a merciless killer, while the apparatus that concealed his crimes is portrayed with great realism and clarity. Driven by both forensic and moral judgement, the book exposes the injustices embedded in Australian settlement history, and the culture of denial that has prevented truth-telling in this country. ‘A major contribution to the study of frontier massacres in Australia’ —Lyndall Ryan

Download or read book PCR 3 written by C. Simon Herrington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-30 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PCR in situ hybridization allows the detection of specific nucleic acid sequences and their distribution in the cell. It combines two powerful techniquesin situ hybridization (ISH), which allows cellular localization of DNA and RNA sequences in cells and tissues, and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which allows reproducible amplification of rare nucleic acid sequences. The combined technique and its variants greatly enhance the sensitivity of in situ hybridization and add morphological localization to the sensitivity of PCR. Such techniques have enormous potential for research and diagnosis but problems with reproducibility and reliability are often encountered. This book overcomes these problems by describing the key procedures in step-by-step detail and by providing the essential advice needed for success. Topics include: DNA in situ PCR and DNA PCR in situ hybridization (PCR ISH) for the detection of DNA targets in cells; reverse trancriptase in situ PCR (RT-PCR) and RT-PCR ISH for the detection of RNA targets; and PRINS (primed in situ synthesis) for chromosomal analysis in interphase nuclei and metaphase chromosome spreads. There are further chapters on fixation of tissues for PCR, selective ultraviolet radiation fractionation (SURF), application of in situ PCR to human tissues, applications and modifications of PCR-ISH, and automation of in situ amplification. PCR In Situ Hybridization is a unique and timely collection of well-tested protocols for the amplification of DNA and RNA in cells and tissues, drawing on the accumulated knowledge and experience of leading exponents of these techniques. For each topic covered, the authors provide detailed guidance on the key steps in the protocols, numerous hints and tips for success, and advice on trouble-shooting. PCR In Situ Hybridization will be invaluable to molecular biologists, pathologists, geneticists, and all those seeking to perform in situ analyses of nucleic acid molecules.
