Book Undaunted

Download or read book Undaunted written by Hugh O'Brien and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Diving was a boys-own adventure, a jump into the unknown full of devil-may-care attitudes. It welcomed you with one hand and cast you asunder with the other. It was a hideous bitch goddess and it drank the blood of the unprepared.’ Since his low-key upbringing, Hugh ‘Obi’ O’Brien’s life has been a wild ride. What led this country boy, one of four sporty sons, from Sydney boarding school to directionless youth to navy clearance diver – slipping undetected through deep waters to defuse mines and dismantle bombs? Then, upping the adrenaline, Obi joined the mysterious Special Forces counterterrorism unit TAG (East) – no walk in the park. In his memoir Undaunted – full of eye-popping anecdotes and sparing the reader nothing of his persistent self-doubt – he recounts this incredible journey. He also describes the difficult transition from military life – to his days risking ‘spaghettification’ on underwater construction projects then private security work pirate-hunting in the Red Sea and tearing along the world’s most dangerous roads in the Middle East. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to follow a high-action alternative route through life, Obi makes a unique guide. Undaunted is an engaging and unexpected account by an operator at once tough, whimsical and funny and always brutally honest.

Book Dad s Maybe Book

Download or read book Dad s Maybe Book written by Tim O'Brien and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2019 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, as an older father, O'Brien resolved to give his young sons what he wished his own father had given to him: a few scraps of paper signed "Love, Dad." Maybe a word of advice. Maybe a sentence or two about some long-ago Christmas Eve. Maybe some scattered glimpses of their aging father, a man they might never really know. In this book, O'Brien moves from soccer games to warfare to risqué lullabies, from alcoholism to magic shows to history lessons to bittersweet bedtime stories, but always returning to a father's soul-saving love for his sons. -- adapted from jacket

Book Information Systems for Emergency Management

Download or read book Information Systems for Emergency Management written by Bartel Van De Walle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the most current and comprehensive overview available today of the critical role of information systems in emergency response and preparedness. It includes contributions from leading scholars, practitioners, and industry researchers, and covers all phases of disaster management - mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. 'Foundational' chapters provide a design framework and review ethical issues. 'Context' chapters describe the characteristics of individuals and organizations in which EMIS are designed and studied. 'Case Study' chapters include systems for distributed microbiology laboratory diagnostics to detect possible epidemics or bioterrorism, humanitarian MIS, and response coordination systems. 'Systems Design and Technology' chapters cover simulation, geocollaborative systems, global disaster impact analysis, and environmental risk analysis. Throughout the book, the editors and contributors give special emphasis to the importance of assessing the practical usefulness of new information systems for supporting emergency preparedness and response, rather than drawing conclusions from a theoretical understanding of the potential benefits of new technologies.

Book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2010

Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2010 written by Stephen Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2011-09-14 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2010 is the third in a series of action plans that have been produced at the start of each decade. The book analyses the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status of all the species and subspecies of Australia's birds, including those of the offshore territories. For each bird the size and trend in their population and distribution has been analysed using the latest iteration of IUCN Red List Criteria to determine their risk of extinction. The book also provides an account of all those species and subspecies that are or are likely to be extinct. Each categorisation is justified on the basis of the latest research, including much unpublished material that has been made available during workshops conducted with leading ornithologists and conservation biologists around the country as well as phone interviews and correspondence. The result is the most authoritative account yet of the status of Australia's birds. In this completely revised edition each account covers not only the 2010 status but provides a retrospective assessment of the status in 1990 and 2000 based on current knowledge, taxonomic revisions and changes to the IUCN criteria, and then reasons why the status of some taxa has changed over the last two decades. Maps have been created specifically for the Action Plan based on vetted data drawn from the records of Birds Australia, its members and its partners in many government departments. The book contains some surprises – some alarming, some encouraging. The status of some birds has improved over the last two decades as a result of dedicated conservation management. Some may not have changed status but at least they are holding their own. Many, however, are continuing to decline and a distressing number are new to the list. There is also an increasing number of birds for which captive insurance populations need not only to be considered as a future option but actively pursued before it is too late. But this is not a book of lost causes. It is a call for action to keep the extraordinary biodiversity we have inherited and pass the legacy to our children. Every one of Australia's threatened taxa can be saved. This book describes the populations of species at greatest risk and outlines ways we can turn them around. 2012 Whitley Award Commendation for Zoological Resource.
