  • Author : Demetrio Paparoni
  • Publisher : Rizzoli Publications
  • Release : 2020-12-01
  • ISBN : 8891822302

Download or read book Nyoman Masriadi written by Demetrio Paparoni and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Nyoman Masriadi, one of the leading Indonesian contemporary artists from the post-Suharto era. This stunning volume comprehensively tackles Nyoman Masriadi's artistic universe, which is considered to be among those that have most strongly impacted the definition of the new art of Southeast Asia. He is Southeast Asia's most well-received contemporary artist at auctions, and the first living Southeast Asian artist whose work has topped $1 million at auction. Masriadi's paintings frequently depict superhuman figures whose narratives, while rooted in Indonesian cultural history, offer witty and often biting social commentary on contemporary life and global pop culture. Through his expert control of light, shadow, and volume, Masriadi endows the monumental characters of his works with a sculptural, almost three-dimensional presence. Sometimes these characters appear in the archetypal roles of comic-book heroes, cowboys, soldiers, and athletes; but just as frequently, they are simply powerfully built people engaged in solitary acts of strength or captured in private moments of vulnerability.

Book Balinese Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adrian Vickers
  • Publisher : Tuttle Publishing
  • Release : 2012-11-10
  • ISBN : 1462909981
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Balinese Art written by Adrian Vickers and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balinese Art is the first comprehensive survey of Balinese painting from its origins in the traditional Balinese village to its present position at the forefront of the high-priced Asian art scene. Balinese art has been popular and widely collected around the world for many decades. In fact, the contemporary painter who commands the highest prices in Southeast Asia's hot art market is Bali-born Nyoman Masriadi (1973–). This book demonstrates that his work draws on a long and deeply-rooted tradition of the Bali art scene. Balinese painting has deep local roots and has followed its own distinctive trajectory, yet has been heavily influenced by outsiders. Indian artistic and religious traditions were introduced to Bali over a thousand years ago through the prism of ancient Javanese culture. Beyond the world of Indonesian art, Balinese artists and craftsmen have also interacted with other Asian artists, particularly those of China, and later Western artists. From these sources, an aesthetic tradition developed that depicts stories from the ancient Indian epics as well as themes from Javanese mythology and the religious and communal life of the Balinese themselves. Starting with a discussion of the island's aesthetic traditions and how Balinese art should be viewed and understood, this book goes on to present pre-colonial painting traditions, some of which are still practiced in the village of Kamasan—the home of "classical" Balinese art. However, the main focus is the development of new styles starting in the 1930s and how these gradually evolved in response to the tourist industry that has come to dominate the island. Balinese Art acquaints readers with the masterpieces and master artists of Bali, and the final chapter presents the most important artists who are active today and serves as an introduction to their work.

Book Contemporary Indonesian Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yvonne Spielmann
  • Publisher : NUS Press
  • Release : 2017-02-28
  • ISBN : 9814722367
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Contemporary Indonesian Art written by Yvonne Spielmann and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesian art entered the global contemporary art world of independent curators, art fairs, and biennales in the 1990s. By the mid-2000s, Indonesian works were well-established on the Asian secondary art market, achieving record-breaking prices at auction houses in Singapore and Hong Kong. This comprehensive overview introduces Indonesian contemporary art in a fresh and stimulating manner, demonstrating how contemporary art breaks from colonial and post-colonial power structures, and grapples with issues of identity and nation-building in Indonesia. Across different media, in performance and installation, it amalgamates ethnic, cultural, and religious references in its visuals, and confidently brings together the traditional (batik, woodcut, dance, Javanese shadow puppet theater) with the contemporary (comics and manga, graffiti, advertising, pop culture). Spielmann's Contemporary Indonesian Art surveys the key artists, curators, institutions, and collectors in the local art scene and looks at the significance of Indonesian art in the Asian context. Through this book, originally published in German, Spielmann stakes a claim for the global relevance of Indonesian art.

Book Modern Painting A Concise History World of Art

Download or read book Modern Painting A Concise History World of Art written by Simon Morley and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new concise history of modern painting offers an indispensable reference to the complexities and characteristics of this medium, which now exists alongside many other contemporary practices that embrace radically expanded ideas about art. While acknowledging the legacy of Herbert Read’s classic 1959 study A Concise History of Modern Painting in the World of Art series, academic and artist Simon Morley places the foundation of modern art much earlier than Read, at the emergence of Romanticism and the dawn of the industrial age. Structured loosely chronologically by period, the focus is as much on individual artists as movements, with works discussed within a broader context—stylistic, historical, geographic, and gender and ethnic frames—themes which recur throughout the chapters. Generously illustrated, the global and diverse range of artists featured include William Blake, Édouard Manet, Hilma af Klint, Kazimir Malevich, Willem de Kooning, Amrita Sher-Gil, Faith Ringgold, and Kehinde Wiley. This guide also includes an appendix in the form of questions the reader might like to ask about the artists and ideas discussed—in order to reconsider the works from a contemporary perspective.

Book Transnational Interconnections of Nature Studies and the Environmental Humanities

Download or read book Transnational Interconnections of Nature Studies and the Environmental Humanities written by Sophia Emmanouilidou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is ecothinking articulated in varied research fields? What are the conjunctions and concurrences of academic endeavors in the attempt to curb environmental destruction? This collection of essays offers a multifaceted exploration of the basic tenets of environmentalism proposed by academic curricula across the world. Ecodestruction, the wilderness, rampant pollution, tourism developments, sustainability, educational interventions, and the plurivocal turn to ecotheoretical textual analysis are some of the critical perspectives and scientific findings investigated here. The book introduces a multilateral understanding of environmental consciousness, and suggests that the study of nature should not be compartmentalized into separate fields of analyses, but aim for the interconnections between disciplines, given that the physical cosmos is an unambiguous and finite host of humanity’s endeavours. The volume appeals to academics, researchers and professionals with a particular interest in the current environmental crisis, offers solid insights into the ways human societies construe nature and hopefully will embark on the protection of the ecosphere.

Book Contemporary Painting World of Art

Download or read book Contemporary Painting World of Art written by Suzanne Hudson and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international survey of contemporary painting by a leading author features artwork from over 250 renowned artists whose ideas and aesthetics characterize the painting of our time. The twentieth century brought radical changes in art—including the shift from modernism to postmodernism—which were accompanied by fierce debates regarding the place of painting in contemporary culture. Contemporary Painting argues that the medium has not only persisted in the twenty-first century but expanded and evolved alongside changes in art, technology, politics, and other factors, developing a unique energy and diversity. Renowned critic and art historian Suzanne Hudson offers an intelligent and original survey of the subject, organized into seven thematic chapters, each of which explores an aspect of contemporary painting, from appropriation to the ways in which artists address and engage the body. Hudson’s inclusive and compelling text is sensitive to issues such as queer narratives, race, activism, and climate and demonstrates the continued relevance of painting today. Bringing together more than 250 eminent artists from around the world, such as Cecily Brown, Julie Mehretu, Theaster Gates, Kara Walker, Kehinde Wiley, Takashi Murakami, and Zhang Xiaogang, this is an essential volume for art history enthusiasts, students, critics, and practitioners interested in discovering how painting is approached, reimagined, and challenged by today’s artists.
