Book Nutritional Therapies for Mental Disorders

Download or read book Nutritional Therapies for Mental Disorders written by Applied Research Press and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4 out of the 10 leading causes of disability in the US and other developed countries are mental disorders. Major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are among the most common mental disorders that currently plague numerous countries and have varying incidence rates from 26 percent in America to 4 percent in China. Though some of this difference may be attributable to the manner in which individual healthcare providers diagnose mental disorders, this noticeable distribution can be also explained by studies which show that a lack of certain dietary nutrients contribute to the development of mental disorders. Notably, essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids are often deficient in the general population in America and other developed countries; and are exceptionally deficient in patients suffering from mental disorders. Studies have shown that daily supplements of vital nutrients often effectively reduce patients' symptoms. Supplements that contain amino acids also reduce symptoms, because they are converted to neurotransmitters that alleviate depression and other mental disorders. Based on emerging scientific evidence, this form of nutritional supplement treatment may be appropriate for controlling major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), addiction, and autism. The aim of this manuscript is to emphasize which dietary supplements can aid the treatment of the four most common mental disorders currently affecting America and other developed countries: major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Most antidepressants and other prescription drugs cause severe side effects, which usually discourage patients from taking their medications. Such noncompliant patients who have mental disorders are at a higher risk for committing suicide or being institutionalized. One way for psychiatrists to overcome this noncompliance is to educate themselves about alternative or complementary nutritional treatments. Although in the cases of certain nutrients, further research needs to be done to determine the best recommended doses of most nutritional supplements, psychiatrists can recommend doses of dietary supplements based on previous and current efficacious studies and then adjust the doses based on the results obtained. Proceeds from the sale of this book go to support an elderly disabled person.

Book Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health A Complete Guide to the Food Mood Connection

Download or read book Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health A Complete Guide to the Food Mood Connection written by Leslie Korn and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the connection between nutrition and mental wellness so therapists can provide more effective, integrated treatment. Diet is an essential component of a client’s clinical profile. Few therapists, however, have any nutritional training, and many don’t know where to begin. In Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health, Leslie Korn provides clinicians with a practical guide to the complex relationship between what we eat and the way we think, feel, and interact with the world. Where there is mental illness there is frequently a history of digestive and nutritional problems. Digestive problems in turn exacerbate mental distress, all of which can be improved by nutritional changes. It’s not unusual for a deficit or excess of certain nutrients to disguise itself as a mood disorder. Indeed, nutritional deficiencies factor into most mental illness—from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia and PTSD—and dietary changes can work alongside or even replace medications to alleviate symptoms and support mental wellness. Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health offers the mental health clinician the principles and practices necessary to provide clients with nutritional counseling to improve mood and mental health. Integrating clinical evidence with the author’s extensive clinical experience, it takes clinicians step-by-step through the essentials for integrating nutritional therapies into mental health treatment. Throughout, brief clinical vignettes illustrate commonly encountered obstacles and how to overcome them. Readers will learn: • Why nutrition matters in mental health • The role of various nutrients in nourishing both the brain and the gut, the “second brain” • Typical nutritional culprits that underlie or exacerbate specific mental disorders • Assessment techniques for evaluating a client’s unique nutritional needs, and counseling methods for the challenging but rewarding process of nutritional change. • Leading-edge protocols for the use of various macro- and micronutrients, vitamins, and supplements to improve mental health • Considerations for food allergies, sensitivities, and other special diets • The effects of foods and nutrients on DSM-5 categories of illness, and alternatives to pharmaceuticals for treatment • Comprehensive, stage-based approaches to coaching clients about dietary plans, nutritional supplements, and other resources • Ideas for practical, affordable, and individualized diets, along with optimal cooking methods and recipes • Nutritional strategies to help with withdrawal from drugs, alcohol and pharmaceuticals And much more. With this resource in hand, clinicians can enhance the efficacy of all their methods and be prepared to support clients’ mental health with more effective, integrated treatment.

Book excerpt: As per the definition of 'healthy' is concerned, both the well-being, mental as well as physical for an individual which is applicable for at any area, male or female, rich or poor. We often talk about healthy by the show of volume of our heavy body or sometimes outlook and skin color . But it is more important about your internal organs are functioning well in coordination with external organs. In a human body, so many cells make so many various tissues which create systems. Similarly, there are so many neurotransmitters, hormones are working for all kind of metabolic & biochemical reactions in our body. People are nowadays more attacked by lifestyles diseases which are also said non-communicable diseases including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, arthritis. There are other issues like kidney & liver disorders. In the lists of lifestyles disorders or NCD, there are uncountable numbers of disorders but all are somehow curable by medicines, proper diet, follow up through physicians & periodic check up. Have we ever think and concern about our mental health. If there is a question then I would say, not often or not very seriously. Because of stress, the workload of office or business, or even so many tension due to family we all are somehow affected by psychological distress which finally leads to mental disorders or can say psychological distress. Of late, since 6 years of a child till 60 years of an old person, all are attacked by stress, depression, and anxiety. The reasons or cause may be different man to man but all are haunted by the disorders which at a certain time takes a typical shape as a 'psychological disorder or mental disorders or psychiatric diseases. As an author, I can make a list of 200 such horrible disorders which often seen in urban areas whether child or adult. Apart from counseling, various medicines following the treatment protocol with the help of drugs (medicines) as per pharmacopeias are regularly been used to cure the patients but the issues remain the same even after 2-3 years. The uses of medicines mainly allopathic medicines which are having tremendous contraindications like renal failure, cardiac or liver issues. The main problem is the most of the medicines are sedative which create drowsiness even too much of sleep and that produce a lot of adipose tissues as so-called 'excess visceral fat' in our body.To get rid of all the drugs and medicines, it's better to start a safe, natural home base treatment which is nothing but nutritional therapy based on our fruits, vegetables at simple cost but no side effects.Role of Foods: Foods very helpful / Useful - Diet low in magnesium was found to increase anxiety-related behaviors. Leafy vegetables, Spinach, Card, legumes, nuts, and whole grains are some of its rich sources. Zinc is one very good mood booster, cashews, liver, egg yolks etc are good sources of zinc. Food rich in omega 3 fatty acids also helps to reduce anxiety. Asparagus is one vegetable that contains a valuable amount of mood-boosting nutrients. One cup alone provides two third of your daily RDA of folate. Vitamin B6 helps the body make several neurotransmitters, including serotonin (a mood controller). Avocados are rich in B vitamins especially B6 thus it is good for this situation.Foods rich in tryptophan used to help in having good sleep, a tryptophan-rich diet helps to reduce anxious feelings.Mostly turkey is good tryptophan-rich food. But lean turkey instead of fried chicken is always preferred.Almond is rich in magnesium, helps in improvement of anxiety-related disorders. Legumes, seeds are also a rich source of magnesium.Milk products like yogurt, fermented foods are helpful in reducing anxiety. Pickles, kombucha etc. are also helpful in reducing social anxiety. Foods Restricted or must avoid - Avoid taking fast food or junk food, Avoid intake of caffeine-contains. We must conclude with this statement
