Book excerpt: It has become increasingly apparent that manipulations in nutrition -- exogenous or endogenous -- may be involved in the pathogenesis of many disease states ranging from metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and obesity, to the prime killer diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. This timely, authoritative reference examines several recent, major developments in the field of nutritional pathology, providing enhanced, current understanding of the role that altered or disturbed nutrition plays in the pathogenesis of disease. Approaching the effects of nutrition from a molecular biology perspective, Nutritional Pathology investigates specific pathological aspects of diet and dietary imbalances, including effects of malnutrition on pancreatic disease, cardiovascular disease, and the central nervous system ... the role of nutrition in drug metabolism and toxicity ... deficiencies in choline, tryptophan, and dietary fibers ... consequences of drug-induced malnutrition ... and much more. Well illustrated and extensively referenced for easy access to the broad expansion of research in this area, Nutritional Pathology will serve as an important resource for all researchers involved in this advancing science, including pathologists, nutritionists, biochemists, cell biologists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, pharmacologists, and oncologists. Moreover, this volume is an essential information source for graduate students in pathology, nutrition, and biochemistry. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Pathology: Oxidative Stress and Dietary Antioxidants bridges the disciplinary knowledge gap to help advance medical sciences and provide preventative and treatment strategies for pathologists, health care workers, food scientists and nutritionists who have divergent skills. This is important as oxidative stress can be ameliorated with pharmacological, nutraceutical or natural agents. While pathologists and clinical workers understand the processes in disease, they are less conversant in the science of nutrition and dietetics. Conversely, nutritionists and dietitians are less conversant with the detailed clinical background and science of pathology. This book helps to fill those gaps. Saves clinicians and researchers time by helping them to quickly access the very latest details on a broad range of pathologies and oxidation issues Combines the science of oxidative stress and the putative therapeutic usage of natural antioxidants in the diet Includes preclinical, clinical and population studies to help pathologists, nutritionists, dieticians, and clinicians map out key areas for research and further clinical recommendations

Book Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium

Download or read book Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As essential nutrients, sodium and potassium contribute to the fundamentals of physiology and pathology of human health and disease. In clinical settings, these are two important blood electrolytes, are frequently measured and influence care decisions. Yet, blood electrolyte concentrations are usually not influenced by dietary intake, as kidney and hormone systems carefully regulate blood values. Over the years, increasing evidence suggests that sodium and potassium intake patterns of children and adults influence long-term population health mostly through complex relationships among dietary intake, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. The public health importance of understanding these relationships, based upon the best available evidence and establishing recommendations to support the development of population clinical practice guidelines and medical care of patients is clear. This report reviews evidence on the relationship between sodium and potassium intakes and indicators of adequacy, toxicity, and chronic disease. It updates the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) using an expanded DRI model that includes consideration of chronic disease endpoints, and outlines research gaps to address the uncertainties identified in the process of deriving the reference values and evaluating public health implications.

Book Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and its Comorbidities

Download or read book Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and its Comorbidities written by Susan Ettinger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and Its Comorbidities: A Case-Study Approach challenges students and practitioners to understand the role of nutrients within the pathophysiology and development of disease, specifically those diseases which develop as a result of obesity. Through a case-based approach, the author presents complex clinical scenarios that require multiple treatment strategies, including targeted diet modification as an adjuvant to medical therapy. The book is divided into 9 modules and 5 appendices each of which covers aspects of obesity and its comorbidities. Within each module, a case is detailed with relevant history, laboratory and physical data, and follow-up information. Each case is followed by a resource section which delineates current understanding of the pathophysiology of the condition, as well as the actions of nutrients and food components shown to modify these processes. A "further readings" section cites current supporting clinical and basic literature as well as published guidelines. Explores how obesity is a key player in the pathophysiology of many diseases, including diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, hypertension, and atherosclerosis Integrates current understandings of the molecular mechanisms of nutrient action on the processes of disease development and treatment Presents students and early practitioners with complex clinical scenarios through a practical case-based approach
