Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

It focuses on studies that report measured contaminant treatments, had robust experimental designs, including replication of control and contaminant treatments, and were published in the peer-reviewed literature. Book excerpt: "The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea - one of the world's most invasive freshwater species - was previously believed to be limited to warm temperate habitats, but has extended its North American range northward into cold temperate waters in recent years. Using lab experiments, I show that C. fluminea tolerance to low oxygen varies across populations; therefore, risk assessments that are based on environmental tolerance data derived from only a single population are unreliable. Using climate suitability modeling techniques, I identify regions in North America at risk of C. fluminea invasion under current and future climate conditions. Finally, I experimentally quantify variation in shell degradation rates across different habitat conditions, to evaluate the feasibility of using spent shells as an indicator of establishment success. These results highlight the importance of accounting for phenotypic variation and context dependence when identifying ecosystems at risk of invasion. " --

Limnoperna fortunei attaches to any hard surface, as well as to some less firm substrates. The growth of Limnoperna populations in raw cooling water conduits became a common nuisance in many industrial and power plants that use raw river or lake water for their processes, both in South America and in Asia. This work is written by experts on the golden mussel from Asia, Europe, North America and South America, each chapter critically reviews previously available information, which is in sources of limited distribution, such as internal reports and theses, in various languages.
