Book excerpt: To help improve nutrition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides nutrition education through five of its programs: Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP); Food Stamp Program (FSP); Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); National School Lunch Program (NLP); and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). In 2002, it spent $472 billion on such efforts. This study examined key actions that officials took to increase the likelihood of success in nutrition education and looked at whether USDA and state and local officials took these actions during program design, service delivery, and program monitoring and evaluation. Researchers interviewed experts in the field of nutrition education research, reviewed key research on the topic, and reviewed GAO reports and other documents on performance-based management. They interviewed officials from each of the five programs and reviewed program reports and studies. They also interviewed state and local officials from each of the programs in three states, conducted site visits in Maryland and California, and conducted telephone interviews with Michigan officials. Finally, they identified and reviewed studies and evaluations of the programs? nutrition education efforts that were conducted over the last 10 years. Results indicated that there were several key actions, based on research and performance-based management principles, that increased the likelihood that programs would achieve their goal (e.g., identifying program goals, tailoring services to meet participant needs, and collecting data on program results). The actions could be taken during program design, delivery, and monitoring and evaluation. The programs generally incorporated the key design actions likely to contribute to success. However, programs? administrative structures hindered coordination among USDA nutrition education efforts. Programs incorporated the service delivery actions likely to cont nutrition education in different ways and to varying extents, but they faced similar challenges affecting their ability to fully incorporate the actions (e.g., limited resources and systems). USDA?s nutrition education efforts did not fully incorporate the monitoring and evaluation actions that contribute to success, such as collecting data on types of nutrition education provided and outcomes of the efforts. Three appendixes present the study scope and methodology, nutrition education goals of key USDA programs, and GAO contacts and staff acknowledgements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor nutrition and lack of physical activity are catching up to tobacco use as the leading cause of death in the U.S. In addition to having negative health outcomes, children with poor nutrition may have a harder time succeeding in school than other children. To help improve nutrition, the USDA provides nutrition education through 5 of its programs. The dep't. spent $472 million on these efforts in FY 2002. This report poses these questions: What key actions can officials take to increase the likelihood of success in nutrition education? Do USDA and state and local officials take these actions during program design, service delivery, and program monitoring and evaluation? This report recommends that the Sec. of Ag. develop a unifying strategy for nutrition educ. efforts.

Book Domestic Food Assistance

Download or read book Domestic Food Assistance written by Kay Brown and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government spends billions of dollars every year on domestic food assistance (FA) programs. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture administers most of these programs and monitors the prevalence of food insecurity -- that is, the percentage of U.S. households that were unable to afford enough food sometime during the year. Other federal agencies also fund FA programs; however, comprehensive and consolidated information on the multiple programs is not readily available. This report examines: (1) the prevalence of food insecurity in the U.S.; (2) spending on FA programs; (3) what is known about the effectiveness of these programs in meeting program goals; and (4) the implications of providing FA through multiple programs and agencies. Download or read book WIC Food Packages written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-28 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (the WIC program) has promoted the health of low-income families for more than 30 years by providing nutrition education, supplemental food, and other valuable services. The program reaches millions of families every year, is one of the largest nutrition programs in the United States, and is an important investment in the nation's health. The U.S. Department of Agriculture charged the Institute of Medicine with creating a committee to evaluate the WIC food packages (the list of specific foods WIC participants obtain each month). The goal of the study was to improve the quality of the diet of WIC participants while also promoting a healthy body weight that will reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The committee concluded that it is time for a change in the WIC food packages and the book provides details on the proposed new food packages, summarizes how the proposed packages differ from current packages, and discusses the rationale for the proposed packages.
