Book Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes

Download or read book Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes written by Bryan Spears and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient enrichment of lakes is a ubiquitous problem, impacting ecological and human health on a global scale by accelerating the pace of eutrophication, often resulting in algal blooms, depleted dissolved oxygen concentrations, and economic harm to surrounding communities. In many lakes, bed sediments are a major but unrecognized source of phosphorus to the water, a process known as internal phosphorus loading. Internal loading is notoriously difficult to measure and manage given the need to access processes operating on and within the lakebed. In addition, climate change threatens to promote internal loading. For example, warming of lakes can increase the release of phosphorus from sediments due to 1) longer and stronger periods of lake stratification resulting in sediment anoxia and 2) enhanced microbial decomposition of organic matter. Degraded water quality not only impairs ecological health but also can influence social pride and community morale. This is the first book dedicated to the understanding of internal phosphorus loading in lakes and examines the causes, the ecological and societal impacts, and options for managing this complex phenomenon. With contributions from leading experts, this edited volume provides a broad view of internal phosphorus loading, methods for measurement, management practices for water quality improvement, case studies from around the world, and recommendations for addressing this growing concern. It is essential reading for environmental and engineering professionals involved in lake and reservoir management, students and faculty in limnology, state and federal authorities involved in water quality regulation, and lakefront homeowners and management boards interested in maintaining lake water quality and managing algal blooms. Key Features * First-ever comprehensive volume on internal phosphorous loading that clearly details what it is and why it occurs * Identifies and explores the drivers of internal phosphorus loading * Provi

Book Plankton and Turbidity

Download or read book Plankton and Turbidity written by Eric George Barham and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of time and space distribution of microorganisms and other materials producing attenuation of light in the open sea. Unicellular organisms in bloom quantities were found to reduce transmission of yellow light. Dinoflagellates were especially important during the summer off Mission Beach, California. Light transmission was also reduced by organic material, particulate detritus, and dissolved pigments. Macroplankton were found to be less important contributors. (Author).

Book Mudflat Ecology

  • Author : Peter G. Beninger
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2019-02-13
  • ISBN : 3319991949

Download or read book Mudflat Ecology written by Peter G. Beninger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intertidal mudflats are distinct, highly-productive marine habitats which provide important ecosystem services to the land-sea interface. In contrast to other marine habitats, and despite a large body of primary scientific literature, no comprehensive synthesis exists, such that the scattered knowledge base lacks an integrated conceptual framework. We attempt to provide this synthesis by pulling together and contextualizing the different disciplines, tools, and approaches used in the study of intertidal mudflats. The editor pays particular attention to relationships between the various components of the synthesis, both at the conceptual and the operational levels, validating these relationships through close interaction with the various authors.
